Hughesville PPG--0, PPA--29.5; YPG--62, YPA--272.5
Hughesville notes: It's been a rough offensive go thus far for the Spartans (0-2) who have been shutout in both games and been unable to sustain drives. They also have not reached 100 yards in either game. The defense has performed well, but has been on the field for long stretches of times and worn down. If the offense finds consistency, the defense has the ability to give this team a chance in every game it plays. Defensive end Jerry Barton sparks that unit after tying for the area lead in sacks a year ago. Barton has collected nine sacks in consecutive seasons and opened 2026 with four tackles for loss against Montgomery. Linebacker Chase Shrwader was all over the field in that game, making a game-high 15 tackles, including 11 solos. Maliki Emmil and Alphonzo Smith also had 10 tackles with Emmil adding an interception and sack. Carter Gordner ended a Montgomery scoring threat with an interception near the goal line. Defensive lineman Colton Woolever set an early physical tone against Montgomery with two tackles for loss.
Hughesville player to watch--Carson Shoemaker: An emerging weapon at linebacker, Shoemaker made six tackles at Montgomery and is part of a deep and well-rounded unit there. He also saw his first offensive carries last week and could be a player Hughesville looks at to try and give the offense a jolt.
Lewisburg PPG--11.0, PPA--31.5; YPG--212, YPA--393
Lewisburg notes: A year ago, Lewisburg won its first game when it blanked Hughesville, 36-0 in Week 4 and now is hoping history repeats itself. The Green Dragons (0-2) have been hit hard by injuries and have shown promise on both sides of the ball despite that. The problem has been, Lewisburg not putting the parts together. In the opener at Danville, the defense struggled before turning it around at Shikellamy a week ago. There, however, the offense hit a road block and was held scoreless. Linebacker Owen Fellon has stormed out of the gates his junior year, making 24 tackles the first two weeks. Fellon also has intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Todd Dershem has made 14 tackles and freshman Mason Bolden has made an immediate impact with 11 tackles in his first two high school games. The offense suffered a blow when quarterback was injured on Lewisburg's first play but still has good weapons. Quarterback Jett Jamieson threw for 121 yards against Danville and Jaylen Walker is the area's active leader in career catches (88) and touchdowns (20). Fellon also ran for 61 yards on nine carries at Danville.
Lewisburg player to watch--Lucas Cassidy: The senior two-way lineman provides both sides a good foundation and made seven tackles in his season debut at Shikellamy, an impressive number for someone up front. Cassidy also had 1 ½ tackles for loss and helped Lewisburg contain an explosive offense.
Outlook: Someone has to break out here ... don't they? Of course, it could be a low-scoring game as the offenses find their way. We'll go with that and say the first one to reach 14 points wins.
