Olivia Kile and Micayla Applegate won a riveting three-set doubles tennis match in a tiebreaker Tuesday, clinching a dramatic 3-2 Hughesville win against Lewisburg. The match was tied 2-2 when the No. 2 doubles match went to a third set. There, both teams went back and forth before Kile and Applegate took the tiebreaker, 10-8. Caroline Hicks and Shelby Myers won straight-set singles matches for Hughesville. Dayssi Weis won at No. 1 singles for Lewisburg without dropping a game and the doubles team of Hailey Exley and Adelyn Conner also prevailed.
South Williamsport and Montgomery produced a similar exciting match with South winning, 3-2. That match also included a thrilling No. 2 doubles match, although South was up, 3-1 at the time. Mylee Morrison and Ava Foote took straight-set singles matches for South as did the doubles team of Peyton Coolidge and Carly Loudenslager. Lainie Solano won at No. 2 singles for Montgomery and the doubles team of Leita Hampton and Kim Huynh rallied from a set down to win the next two, 7-5 and 10-8 in a tiebreaker.
The entertaining doubles matches continued in Muncy’s 5-0 victory against Bucktail with both matches going the distance. Alaina Krepinevich and Ruth Lauchle won a first-set tiebreaker and came back after dropping the second set to win the third, 10-8. At No. 2 doubles, Aly Eck and Raegen Charles also thundered back after losing the second set, winning the last one, 10-1 to take the match. Zoe Dohl, Lola Fox and Elizabeth Howard all won straight-set singles matches.
Loyalsock cruised to a 5-0 win at Bloomsburg, winning three of the five contested matches. Emily Crawford dropped just one game in a straight-set No. 1 singles while, Caroline Crawford won, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The doubles team of Lashlyn Sauers and Annalise Berger also easily won, 6-0, 6-2.
Central Mountain took all three singles matches and defeated Williamsport, 4-1. Again, No. 2 doubles featured a back-and-forth three-set match with a super tiebreaker. Central Mountain’s Kylee Markle and Erin Parker fought back from a set down and won the final two sets, 6-3, 11-9. Addison Lindsay, Lacy Walker and Lane Walker all won at singles. Williamsport’s doubles team of Gianna Viitko and Madelyn Luncy won a straight set match.
• Hughesville’s Carter Gormont scored in the 77th minute to tie the game and force overtime as Montoursville and Hughesville played to a 2-2 draw. Gormont had both of Hughesville’s goals.
Montoursville saw Levi Nolan and CJ Lucas score while Lucas had an assist.
Dylan Sherman recorded six goals to help Montgomery defeat Sullivan County in Mid-Penn action, 7-1. He scored just nine minutes into the game to put the Red Raiders ahead early.
The Red Raiders led just 2-1 at the break as Sullivan scored on an own goal just before the half, but the Red Raiders used a five-goal second half to pull away.
“During our halftime discussion, we addressed how to modify our attack to allow us to utilize our resources a bit better,” Montgomery coach Michael Sherman said. “The change opened up numerous opportunities throughout the second half and Montgomery’s senior forward was up for the challenge recording four goals in about a 20 minute stretch.”
Lewisburg defeated Shikellamy, 4-1, thanks to three first-half goals. Dylan Vogel, Daedrian Campbell, Lincoln Ayres and Jack Kohl all had goals as Keegan Crosby posted two assists. Marcos Iudica and Jack Kohl both added assists.
The Green Dragons’ back line allowed just three shots on goal as Gabe Pawling had two saves.
Wellsboro scored six goals in the first half en route to a convincing 10-0 win against North Penn-Liberty at home. Liam Stevens scored twice while Gabe Cuneo, Callen Novak, Jacob Smith, Octavian Wynam, Fen Moyer, Cody Tomlinson, Colin Fletcher and Zander Rochiele all put in goals.
Wellsboro out-shot the Mounties, 27-4 and dominated the game from start to finish.
• South Williamsport scored four goals in the second half to defeat Sullivan County, 7-1, after leading just 3-1 at the break. Ana Oeler and Ayla Minier both scored twice and Sofia Sartori had a goal and assist.
The Mounties also saw Maddie Reidy and Kloey Persun score. Sullivan County’s lone goal was from Quinn Pannella.
Rachel Paulhamus fed a ball to Kiki Woodward to give Muncy a lead 13 minutes into the game, but Millville would score five unanswered goals to secure a 5-1 Mid-Penn win against the Indians.
Millville held a 14-8 edge in shots on goal as Hailey Ganoe recorded nine saves to keep Muncy in the game.
Nora Withey scored Jersey Shore’s only goal as the Bulldogs suffered a 6-1 loss against Selinsgrove.
• Selah Persing scored with no time remaining in the third quarter to tie the game and it stayed that way through overtime as Muncy tied Northwest, 1-1 in field hockey. Evelyn Niedermyer assisted persing on the goal.
• In high school golf, Central Mountain fell to Selinsgrove, 178-184. The Wildcats were led by Nolan Karstetter’s 42, Kai Fravel’s 46, Tucker Brungardt’s 46 and Landen Hill’s 51.
• Lewisburg used its girls’ cross country match to sweep a quad meet against Williamsport, Hughesville and Shamokin, edging Hughesville by one point and Williamsport by eight. Hughesville went 2-1, fighting off Williamsport and beating Shamokin. Williamsport, however, produced four of the race’s top five finishers, including sisters Isabelle Sanders and Madeline Sanders who finished Nos. 1-2. Isabelle won in a time of 18 minutes, 51 seconds with her sister coming in at 19:39.
On the boys side, defending Class AA state champion Hughesville swept the meet, holding off Lewisburg and Williamsport by 12 points each. Wyatt Laubacher led the way for Hughesville, winning in a time of 17:16. Lewisburg’s Thomas Graham took third, Hughesville’s Joseph Laubacher fourth and Williamsport’s Lauger Waldman fifth.
The Sullivan County boys improved to 5-0, sweeping a tri-meet from Troy and Cowanesque Valley in impressive fashion, winning, 18-37 and 16-39, respectively. The top four finishers were from Sullivan with Calen Sweigart winning in a time of 18:20. Chase Preston took second, Carter Blasi third and Seth Sweigart fourth, all coming in under 19:25.
The Sullivan girls split two close races in their race, edging Troy, 26-29 and dropping a one-point battle to CV, 27-28. Zoey Reese was the top finisher for Sullivan, taking fourth in 24:34. She was one of four Griffins to place in the top 10.
The North Penn-Mansfield girls and boys teams swept tri-meets against Athens and Sayre, easily topping Athens and winning vs Sayre via forfeit. North Penn-Mansfield took the first four places in the girls race with Leila Garverick winning in 22:35. Jaci Fairchild was right behind in second, finishing just three seconds off the pace.
Michael Knefley led the way for the boys, winning in a time of 17:42. Brayden Vanloon took fourth in 20:56.
Wellsboro fell to Towanda (15-49) and Wyalusing (16-47) in boys cross country. The Green Hornets’ top finisher was William Rudy, a freshman, who ran a time of 20:28.00 to take 11th place.
On the girls side, Wellsboro lost to Towanda (20-40) and Wyalusing (22-33). Wellsboro senior Lauren Kosek ran a time of 20:45.00 to win, the only runner to break the 21-minute mark on the girls side.
Molly Tice of Wellsboro, a junior, took tenth by finishing in 25:14.00.
• Lewisburg played a strong match against Loyalsock, winning three straight hard-fought sets in a 3-0 victory in girls volleyball action. Sarah Hodrick had a good game for Loyalsock with nine assists, four kills, and a block. Sophia Wetzel produced 15 digs and Aly Hughes five assists with four kills. Taylor Barowy added two aces.
Wellsboro swept Northeast Bradford, 3-0 (25-7, 25-16, 25-11). Peyton Keane had a team-high 11 kills and Kendall Sweet recorded 10. Ellie Largey had 16 assists while Jillian Mickey recorded 14.
Sweet had a team-high 15 points and Ady Frantz had 14. Wellsboro saw Maddy Cruttenden Frantz and Maddy Flannery each record six digs.
