Muncy hosted its annual girls field hockey tournament where the Indians came in first place, Danville took second and Benton was third.
In the first game, Muncy beat Benton, 5-1. Grace Hogan scored two goals in the second quarter that were assisted by Selah Persing and Rosie Zalonis. In the fourth quarter, Ashlyn Lamper scored and it was assisted by Avery Waldman.
Persing added a goal of her own, assisted by Rasie Zalonis, before Gigi Leet scored the final goal off an assist by Evelyn Niedermyer.
Muncy cruised past Danville, 7-0. Anastasia Capra scored unassisted in the first quarter and Persing scored twice in the second quarter, both assisted by Zalonis. Persing recored a hat trick in the third quarter, again with an assist by Zalonis.
In the fourth quarter, Niedermyer scored unassisted, Grace Hogan scored off an assist by Waldman and Waldman scored off an assist by Persing.
Muncy had four players make the all-tournament team. Persing was selected as a forward, Hogan and Leet were named as defenders and Zalonis was named all-tournament MVP.
In the second game, Danville beat Benton, 1-0.
• Warrior Run defeated Line Mountain in a Class A battle in girls soccer to earn a 5-4 win in a back-and-forth contest. Line Mountain scored two goals early to take a 2-0 lead over the defenders. But Scarlett Dunkelberger scored off an assist by Nat Hall to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Then it was Lacey Betz early in the second half off another Hall assist to tie it up. Dunkleberger scored the third goal for a brief 3-2 lead before the Eagles tied it up. Hall scored on a penalty kick for a 4-3 Defenders’ lead and Dunkleberger put in a goal for a 5-3 lead. Line Mountain scored once more, but weren’t able to put in a game-tying goal late.
Hailey Smith scored the game’s only goal in the second half to propel Wellsboro to a tough 1-0 win against Muncy, dropping the Indians to 2-5-1. Smith scored in the 63rd minute of the game. Hailey Ganoe had three saves for Muncy while Jadyn Dunlap recorded five.
Williamsport and Altoona battled to a tough scoreless draw. Valerie Beiter had three saves for Williamsport to prevent Altoona from putting in a goal and taking a lead.
• A goal 30 seconds into the game gave Williamsport a 1-0 win against Altoona. Connor Hofstrom scored the lone goal as the Millionaires held on as Altoona had a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal. Max Fink had 14 saves for Williamsport.
Gabe Cuneo scored off a penalty kick and Mason Brill put in a goal off a free kick to give Wellsboro a 2-0 win over Jersey Shore. The Green Hornets out-shot the Bulldogs, 11-6. Kayden Rogers had six saves for the Green Hornets and Aiden Lape had nine for Jersey Shore.
Muncy suffered a 3-0 setback against Millville as the Quakers scored two second-half goals after lead just 1-0 at the break. Grayson Betz scored twice in the second half, one coming off a penalty kick.
Muncy keeper Bodie Moyer recorded 11 saves to reach 503 for his career. He reached the 500-save milestone in the 60th minute. He’s the first Muncy keeper in boys soccer history to reach the 500-save mark for a career.
• South Williamsport secured a 3-2 win at home in girls tennis. Amanda Goncalves won at No. 1 singles for the Green Hornets against Mylee Morrison, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Morgan Ertel of South Williamsport beat Piper Anderegg in three sets, 1-6, 6-3 6-4.
Ava Foote won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4, against Serenty Mosher.
In doubles action, Wellsboor’s Angie Cory and Kya Lawton beat Peyton Coolidge and Carly Loudenslager, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and at No. 2 doubles, South Williamsport’s Caroline Melvin and Annabelle Fry beat Kyleigh Lynn and Selah Hoprich, 6-3, 6-2.
Hughesville swept Montgomery to earn a 5-0 win. Talia Saka beat Arianna Snyder at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2 and at No. 2 singles, Hughesville’s Caroline Hicks earned a 6-1, 6-1 win vs. Emily Miller. Shelby Myers of Hughesville won at No. 3 singles over Avelyn Moore, 6-3, 6-2, 10-8.
In doubles competition, Niamo Farley and Isabella Olshefskie beat Leane Fouquet and Laine Solano, 6-0, 6-1. Hughesville’s team of Olivia Kile and Micayla Applegate beat Sophia Snyder and Maddie Hamm in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.
• Loyalsock competed in a tri-match in girls volleyball against Northeast Bradford and beat the Panthers, 3-1 (24-26, 25-14, 25-13, 26-24). Aly Hughes had eight kills while Gia Mertes, Peyton Phillips and Sarah Hdorcik each recorded six kills. Taylor Barowy had 11 assists and Hodrick had eight. Sophia Wetzel led Loyalsock with 11 digs and Madi Mercaldo had nine and Barowy and Sophia Cole each recorded three aces.
Against Wyalusing, Loyalsock fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-19).
Hughes led Loyalsock with five kills and Mertes and Mercaldo had three. Hodrick had a team-high seven assists and Wetzel had nine digs. Barowy had two aces.
• At the Ben Bloser Invitational, Sullivan County had success all around. The Griffins’ bys team took second with 91 points, narrowly falling to Shalom Christian Academy’s 87. The Sullivan girls team finished fourth with a score of 130, behind only York Catholic (72), Richland (83) and Brookville (127).
Calen Sweigart was the top Sullivan County boys runner as he ran a time of 17:24.60 to take ninth. Carter Blasi was 20th in 18:02.10 and Chase Preston as 22nd in 18:17.30 for the Griffins.
Zoey Reese was Sullivan’s top girls runner as she took 27th with a time of 22:28.40 while teammate Addisyn Templin was 28th in 22:29.30. Paige Jordan ran a time of 22:31.90 for third.
• Junior Ella Magee recorded her second career hat trick to lead the Lycoming College women’s soccer team over Buffalo State, 7-5, in a non-conference matchup.
Lycoming (3-3) scored four of their seven goals in the second half and finished with 18 shots, including 11 on goal. The team recorded a season-high seven goals and the 12 combined goals were the most for the program in one game since 2017. Magee became the fourth Warrior to reach 30 career goals in the game and finished the game third in school history with 31 scores.
Senior Norah Mosley opened the scoring in the 19th minute, scoring directly off the second of back-to-back corner kicks. Buffalo State answered with an equalizer, but the Warriors answered Buffalo State’s equalizer with two goals in a 1:35 span, as Magee converted a penalty kick at 30:08 and senior Kaitlyn Born scored from senior Mikayla Long, a Lewisburg graduate, and Magee at 31:43 for a 3-1 lead. The Bengals pulled one back at 32:49, but the Warriors reached halftime ahead 3-2.
Louisa Thomsen and Ingrid Murphy scored first-half goals less than four minutes apart, and Dani Howard scored an important insurance goal in the 71st minute to lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Lehigh in the Patriot League openers for both sides.
The Bison (4-5-1) dominated play for much of the match, outshooting Lehigh (0-7-1) 33-7, including a 20-1 disparity in the first half. Bucknell was buzzing right from the opening touch but needed 28 minutes to get on the scoreboard. Thomsen had just been robbed by Lehigh goalkeeper Chloe Zipprich, who went high to tip her sliding shot over the bar. But on the ensuing corner kick, Thomsen headed home Murphy's service for her second goal of the season.
Seconds later, Gaby Parker got in behind the back line but was denied by Zipprich, and then only three minutes after that, Murphy scored a goal of the year candidate. Emma Gavin switched fields to Clare Nemsick, who send a ball forward to Murphy. The freshman, who came off the bench after missing the previous game with an injury, shielded off her defender and curled in a 30-yard shot to the top right corner.
Mansfield competed against third-ranked West Chester for a PSAC matchup and fell, 5-0. The Mounties (1-6, 0-5 PSAC) Angel Gule recorded 16 saves in the game, putting her season total to 74. The Golden Rams (5-0-1, 4-0-1 PSAC) collected three goals in the first half and finished their day with two in the second.
Lock Haven fell to Gannon, 3-0, in PSAC Western Division action. Gannon scored once in the first half and added two goals early in the second half to secure the conference victory over Lock Haven
Lock Haven generated three first-half shots, including shots on goal by Lily O'Brien and Colleen Lloyd, but Gannon made both saves to preserve the 1-0 halftime lead. Gannon extended its advantage to 3-0 with goals in the 53rd and 55th minute.
Penn College lost to Moravian, 3-1, in non-conference competition. The Wildcats finished with eight shots, four on goal, while Moravian put seven of its nine shots on frame. PCT fell to 4-2-0 overall. Moravian is 3-1-2 overall.
Camryn Lobb put the Wildcats in front 1-0 in the sixth minute, finishing Ella Garman’s assist at 5:55. Moravian tied it at 16:56 and went ahead 2-1 at 32:05, while Harley Oliphant made three saves in the half. PCT had late chances from Garman and Lily Persing, but the half ended with Moravian leading 2-1.
The Wildcats created four second-half shots, including saved attempts by Lobb in the 47th minute and Persing in the 73rd, but could not cut into the deficit. Moravian scored the half’s only goal at 48:34, as Lilyanna Potts finished Delaney Rowe’s assist to move the score to 3-1. PCT also earned corners from Makayla Bucks and Garman, and Moravian held that 3-1 margin to the final whistle.
• The Lycoming College men’s soccer team triumphed over Misericordia, 4-0, on Saturday night, Sept. 19, in a nonconference match. The Warriors scored twice in each half and held Misericordia to three shots on goal. Lycoming’s four goals marked a season high.
Freshman Connor Hussman scored a season-best twice, including the game-winning goal. Sophomore Leandro Cruz added a goal and an assist for three points, scoring in his second consecutive game and recording his first assist of the season. First-year Dylan Motta scored his first goal of the season on his lone shot and junior Jace Bennett played all 90 minutes in goal, making three saves in his second shutout of the year.
Hussman put the Warriors in front in the ninth minute off Cruz's assist, then added another goal in the 21st minute from senior Andrew Barclay to make it 2-0. The Warriors also earned three corner kicks, and Bennett made two saves as the Warriors carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Lock Haven earned a hard-fought 1-0 road victory over the University of the District of Columbia. The win marked Lock Haven's (2-2-4) first victory of the season and extended its unbeaten run to three matches.
Billy Lawrence scored the lone goal of the match in the 70th minute, while Reece Kordes made one save to secure the clean sheet for the Bald Eagles.
After a scoreless first half, Lock Haven broke through in the 70th minute. Austen Veach and Nicholas McGhin connected on the buildup before finding Lawrence, who finished the opportunity at the 69:40 mark to give Lock Haven the 1-0 advantage.
Penn College dropped a tough, 1-0 non-conference final to Ramapo. The Wildcats put four of their six shots on goal but were held scoreless. The Wildcats dropped to 3-3-2 overall. Ramapo is 3-2-1 overall.
Penn College kept Ramapo scoreless in the first half despite four Roadrunner corner kicks, with Justin Crismale making two saves. The Wildcats put one shot on goal when William Watson tested Zachary Natt in the 23rd minute, then earned a corner kick shortly after before the half ended 0-0.
The Wildcats put three shots on goal in the second half, including saves on Warrick Beachy’s header at 53:30 and Christian Bressler’s attempt at 61:54. Ramapo broke through with a goal at 64:43 to go ahead 1-0. Robert Antonini made a defensive save early in the half, and Penn College later generated a Diaz corner before Crismale’s shot was saved at 89:26. Ramapo held the score there for the 1-0 finish.
• Senior Loghan Shelley notched a goal and assist to lead the Lycoming College field hockey team to a 3-0 non-conference victory over Cedar Crest College at the FalconPlex. Lycoming (3-3) earned their first shutout win of the season, outshooting Cedar Crest (2-3), 21-7, in the contest.
Shelly was in the middle of the first Warrior goal less than five minutes into the contest, finding junior Lacy Eckard, a Muncy graduate, for Eckard’s second tally of the season. Less than three minutes into the second period, sophomore Laurel Fite pocketed an unassisted score, her fourth of the season, to put the Warriors ahead 2-0 going into halftime.
• The Lycoming College cross country team competed at DeSales University with the women placing fourth with 129 points in the 6K, while the men concluded in eighth with 224 points in the 8K.
The Warrior women secured a fourth-place finish in the 6K team standings with 129 points. Senior Regan Jury led the team with a fourth-place finish in 23:28.40 and senior Sydney Taylor followed in 27th at 26:11.90.
The Warrior men completed the competition in eighth place in the 8K team standings with 224 points. Senior Avery Rosan led the men in 59th at 31:01.00, followed by sophomore Jacob Carr in 71st at 33:34.90.
• Penn College suffered two losses on Saturday at the Grove City/Westminster Invitational. The Wildcats fell to Saint Vincent 3-0 (16-25, 15-25, 21-25) and dropped a 3-0 decision to Westminster (16-25, 13-25, 10-25). The Wildcats are now 0-13 overall.
Against the Bearcats, Penn College was held to 13 kills and a -.065 hitting percentage, while Saint Vincent finished with 31 kills and a .097 percentage.
Penn College opened the first set strong with four consecutive points on Taryn Smith’s serve, which included two aces. However, Saint Vincent quickly fought back to tie the game at 7-7. A kill from Lilly Stockum put the Wildcats ahead 8-7, but Saint Vincent went on a five-point run, leading to a 25-16 set loss for PCT.
The second set saw the Wildcats fall behind early, with Saint Vincent scoring the first seven points. Despite a late rally that included a block from Sam Prisco and a shared block from Kendall Shade and Kiera Clarkson, Penn College dropped the set 25-15.
Lock Haven won its third straight match with a dominant sweep of Lackawanna on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Falcons 25-9, 25-4, 25-11 inside Thomas Field House. The Bald Eagles improved to 8-4 overall with the victory, while Lackawanna fell to 0-6. The Bald Eagles have won seven of their last eight games and are riding a three-match winning streak.
Lock Haven controlled the match from the opening serve, never trailing and recording no ties or lead changes across the three-set contest. The Bald Eagles hit .362 as a team, totaling 33 kills against just eight attack errors on 69 attempts.
The Bald Eagles posted 10 kills in the opening set and earned the 25-9 decision. Lock Haven was nearly flawless offensively in the second frame, hitting .560 with 14 kills and no errors en route to a 25-4 victory. The Bald Eagles completed the sweep with a 25-11 win in the third set.
The Lycoming College women’s volleyball team split a tri-match, taking down Delaware Valley, 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18), before falling to Albright, 3-1 (22-25, 28-26, 26-28, 19-25).
Lycoming (3-8) started the day against Delaware Valley (1-8), using a seven-point run to take a 9-2 lead in the first set, with sophomore Addison Morgan serving six straight points, including two aces. Delaware Valley trimmed the gap later, but the Warriors secured late points on aces from Morgan and Kamryn Skeith to help take the set, 25-19.
The Warriors led 20-18 late in the second set, but Delaware Valley scored the next four points and went on to take the set 25-21, evening the match.
• The Lycoming College women’s tennis team fell, 7-0, in a Landmark conference match at Scranton. Lycoming dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while Scranton moves to 1-1 both overall and in conference play.
Junior Sadie Stahl, a South Williamsport graduate, and freshman Emma Dubnansky made a strong push in No. 1 doubles before falling 6-4. The Warriors will welcome Susquehanna for a Landmark Conference match on Wednesday. The match will get underway at 4 p.m. at Brandon Park.
• Senior Junior Shams, a South Williamsport graduate, and freshman Teli Bobotas, a Montoursville graduate, picked up victories in singles play for the Lycoming College men’s tennis team, which fell, 5-2, to the University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference match.
Lycoming fell to 0-3, 0-2 in Landmark play, while Scranton moved to 3-0, 2-0 in the Landmark.
Shams picked up his victory in No. 2 singles in convincing fashion, breezing to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Bobotas took his victory in No. 3 singles in back-and-forth fashion, emerging 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
The Warriors will return to action on Saturday when they host a non-conference match at home with Misericordia. The match will get underway at 1 p.m.
Penn College defeated Lock Haven, 4-3. The Wildcats won four of six singles matches, taking Nos. 1 through 4, while Lock Haven University won two of three doubles matches. This victory marked the first time Penn College has defeated Lock Haven since the 2019-20 season. The Wildcats are 1-1 overall. Lock Haven fell to 0-2 overall.
The Wildcats split the first two completed doubles courts before Lock Haven University secured the doubles point. Emma McLaughlin and Faith Murray defeated Alyse Bass and Breanna Chicas 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, but Maci Rohrbach and Alaina Marchioni answered with a 6-4 win over Leah Vest and Kiera Wene at No. 1. Emma Ackley and Hope Lapinski then defeated Alex McDougal and Arista Fine 7-5 at No. 3 to clinch the point for Lock Haven University.
Starting singles down 1-0, the Wildcats fell behind 2-0 when Lapinski defeated Fine 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Murray put the Wildcats on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Chicas at No. 4, before Ackley defeated McDougal 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 to give Lock Haven University a 3-1 lead.
