The Williamsport boys and girls’ cross country teams put together excellent races Tuesday, sweeping quad meets against Jersey Shore, Central Mountain and Mifflinburg. Williamsport’s Jude Fisher (18 minutes, 50 seconds) and Madeline Sanders (23:34) each won their respective races in thrilling fashion, taking them in a second or less. Lauger Waldman, Brysen Thornton and Noah Baird took third, fourth and fifth in the boys’ race with Jersey Shore’s Sam Davis finish in second, less than a second behind Fisher.
Sanders held off teammate Loisa Hofstrom who took second, while Lola Kastner was fifth. Central Mountain’s Gabriella Hosley and Emma Wolfe finished in second and third.
Lewisburg’s boys and girls teams also swept meets, the boys defeating two opponents and the girls topping three. Lewisburg dominated the boys race with finishers Nos. 2-10 all from there. Tyler Confer took second in 18:25. In the girls’ race, Lewisburg’s Ella Beal, Kaelyn Bozella and Porter Durden Spiro took the top three spots. Warrior Run’s Elizabeth Wentz was fourth and Loyalsock’s Camille Lamblin seventh.
Both the Sullivan County boys and girls’ teams split tri-meets with Athens and Northeast Bradford, defeating Athens and losing close match-ups against NEB. Calen Sweigart took second in the boys race, finishing in 17:08. Paige Jordan took third in the girls’ race in 21:25.
Wellsboro competed in a cross country meet with Sayre at Troy. The Troy boys beat Wellsboro, 16-47. Wellsboro’s top finisher was Will Rudy, who took sixth wtih a time of 21:19 Taitt Webster ran a 23:12.30 to take 11th.
On the girls side, Wellsboro lost to Troy narrowly, 26-29. Lauren Kosek ran a 21:56 to take first place. ellsboro’s Molly Tice was fifth in 29:40 and Welslboro’s Louisa Crocco was sixth with a time of 30:07.
• Elsa Kehrer fought back form a set down to win at No. 1 singles in three sets and highlight Montoursville’s 5-0 win against Mifflinburg. Kehrer took the final two sets, 6-4 and 10-6 in the super set tie-breaker. Bella Wanner and Makenna Vought won in straight sets. The doubles teams of Mya Wilson and Laurel Calvert and Cadence Emick and Reagan Gonzalez also prevailed in straight sets.
Aubree Reichard and Alainia Samar were victorious at No. 2 doubles for Jersey Shore in a 4-1 loss against Danville. Reichard and Samar won their match in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
• Khaya Bennett scored with 15 minutes remaining in the game to give Montoursville an exciting 1-0 win at Hughesville in girls soccer.
Bennett’s goal came in the 66th minute. The Spartans out-shot Montoursville, 13-5, but couldn’t get a goal past Abby Strassner, who recorded 10 saves. Hughesville’s Kalia Hack had four saves for the Spartans to keep Hughesville in the game.
Loyalsock suffered a tough 6-0 loss to undefeated Central Columbia as Joey Devlin had a hat trick and Quinlan Blake scored twice. The Blue Jays out-shot the Lancers, 12-3, as Ava Deknecht recorded six saves for Loyalsock in goal.
Sullivan County’s Charley Insinger recorded seven saves, but the Griffins suffered a 1-0 loss against Northumberland Christian. The Griffins out-shot Northumberland Christian, 12-8.
Wellsboro’s Haylie Smith recorded a hat trick while Kate Bryant had a goal and two assists in the Green Hornets’ 4-1 win over Towanda on the road in an NTL battle. Wellsboro limited Towanda’s offense to just four shots total.
Payton Spigelmyer and Maddie Schwartz each scored two goals, helping Lewisburg blank Mount Carmel, 7-0. Alex Murr, Addy Barner and Lauren Asche also scored goals for the Green Dragons.
Mifflinburg won a defensive battle against Williamsport, 1-0. Valerie Beiter made two saves for the Millionaires.
• Jersey Shore’s Gabe Welshans scored off an assist by Dylan Hensler, but the Bulldogs suffered a lopsided 10-1 loss to Central Columbia in boys soccer.
The Bulldogs were able to fire off just four shots.
• Penn College defeated Penn State Berks, 4-2, in United East Conference women’s soccer. The victory marked Penn College’s first-ever win against Penn State Berks, as they were previously 0-11-1 – dating back to the 2014 season – heading into the game.
Goals were scored early and often as Camryn Lobb scored just 2:40 into the game and Penn State Berks answered in the fourth minute. Megan Kurian retaliated in the eighth minute and netted a brace in the 31st minute to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead into halftime. Hughesville graduate Avery Puderbach assisted on Lobb’s touch and Lily Persing connected both times to Kurian.
• The Lycoming College women’s tennis team earned wins from their top four singles players to swipe a 4-3 victory over Division II Lock Haven at Brandon Park.
Lycoming (3-4) overcame dropping the doubles point against Lock Haven (0-3) with strong individual efforts in singles play to defeat their higher-division foe for the second time in the last three seasons.
In singles play, junior Sadie Stahl, a South Williamsport graduate, roared to a 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles, followed shortly afterwards by a 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles from first year Emma Dubnansky and the first win of the year for junior Yeanneth Rosado in No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
• The Lycoming College men’s golf team participated in the Susquehanna University Fall Invitational, held the par-70, 6,261-yard Susquehanna Valley Country Club. The Warriors stood 12th after shooting 327 in the round, with sophomore Tre Lesperance led the team with a 75 (plus-5), tying for 14th individually in the field of 75.
Lesperance posted three birdies and eight pars in his round.
Senior Will Eberz tied for 39th after shooting 79 (plus-9), posting two birdies, and freshman Seth Fisher tied for 42nd with an 80 (plus-10), notching a birdie on the first hole of his round. Freshman Mason Farrell contributed with a 93 (plus-23), and senior Jay Huber shot 112 (plus-42).
• Lock Haven’s women’s volleyball team won for its fifth win in six matches, sweeping three sets from Millersville, 25-18, 25-17 and 25-8. Lock Haven (10-5, 3-1 PSAC) hit .306 as a team and limited Millersville to a .044 hitting percentage and has won nine of 11 matches.
