Montgomery's boys soccer team bounced back from a loss in the season opener to defeat Wyalusing, 7-0, at Red Raider Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
"The boys were unhappy with their performance earlier in the week and were frustrated they could not find the net," according to Montgomery coach Michael Sherman.
Montgomery turned it around spreading out the offense with four players finding the net, including two first career goals in varsity soccer for the Red Raiders. Montgomery wasted little time getting on the score board when just 5:43 into the game when junior Jackson Wilver hit a deep drive pass the Ram's keeper to go up 1-0.
That score sparked the Red Raiders when Cody Sechrist found the net under a minute later off an assist from Dylan Sherman.
It was then Dylan Sherman's turn when he took a pass from younger brother Weston Sherman cutting through the Ram's defenders putting him one on one with Wyalusin's keeper. Dylan Sherman placed the ball high into the side netting for the score. Although all goals are special, this was the one he has been waiting for since late last October.
It was his 50th career goal for Dylan Sherman, officially placing him third all-time in scoring behind Seth McQuay and older brother Owen.
"It was great for Dylan to have an opportunity to put his name on the school's 50-goal banner at our home stadium in front of our fans off an assist from his brother," coach Sherman said. "He has been a big part of our success throughout my coaching career here at Montgomery."
Dylan Sherman turned up the pressure on Wyalusing's defense recording the next 3 consecutive goals for the Red Raiders. He was assisted again by Weston Sherman and Jackson Wilver. Montgomery had the opportunity for the younger players to get a significant amount of playing time in the win.
"It was great seeing our freshmen class of Barto, Masters, Lindsey, Schmidt and Sherman out there mixing it up with the upperclassmen. I thought they did very well and will build confidence each time they take the field," coach Sherman said. "I was particularly impressed with Carson Barto on defense and the offense produced by Weston Sherman recording a goal and two assists."
The win however did not come without a cost to the Red Raiders. Junior midfielder Jackson Wilver sustained an injury early in the second half of the match requiring medical attention.
"We wish Jackson a speedy recovery and hope to get him back into the lineup soon," coach Sherman said. "He had a big day recording his first varsity goal as well as an assist for the Red Raiders."
Montgomery will open up Mid-Penn League play on Tuesday evening hosting Sullivan County at 7 p.m.
