Muncy notes: Muncy (1-1) had an extra day to prepare for another long road trip after blasting Wyalusing, 45-0 last Thursday. The Indians scored touchdowns on all six first-half possessions and allowed just 77 yards, including eight on the ground. Freshman linebacker Finn Thomas was in on nearly every tackle on the first two possessions and Cullen Reed produced both a sack and interception. Allen Schoonmaker added a sack and Nasir Miller's deflection led to Reed's interception. Quarterbacks Noah Walters and Noah Weikle combined for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Walters leads the area in passer rating and both have gone over 200 yards through two weeks. Nate Rogers is tied for second among area receivers with 10 catches and also is second in yards. Reed caught four passes for 74 yards and a touchdown and fellow sophomore Chance Boozer is a big-play threat. Layken Harris and Jaxson Thomas both ran for touchdowns at Wyalusing and each provides Muncy quality work at linebacker, although Harris played just offense in his first game back last week. The Indians have forced seven turnovers and two games and four players have interceptions.
Muncy player to watch--Kynton Fish: Three plays after defensive catalyst Drew Ryder had a long touchdown catch called back at Wyalusing, Fish erased that frustration, speeding by the defense and hauling in a 50-yard Walters scoring strike. Fish is part of a deep and versatile receiving unit and also is playing well while starting at safety. The junior has made 14 tackles and added an interception.
Sayre PPG--1.0, PPA--55.0; YPG--109, YPA--455
Sayre notes: Sayre has lost 17 straight games and is a young team which has had a tough stretch to open the season. The Redskins faced two 2-0 teams the past two weeks and are searching for their first offensive points. They showed promise at South Williamsport a week ago as Hudson Malanoski ran for a career-high 113 yards. He, Riley Johnson and quarterback Declan Berry all are returning starters, providing the team some valued experience. Sayre has allowed more than 400 yards in both games, although it did generate a safety against Towanda. Muncy and Sayre had some battles last decade with Sayre winning regular season contests in 2016, 2018 and 2019 before Muncy exacted revenge in the playoffs, winning the 2016 title at Sayre and semifinals at home the next two times.
Sayre player to watch--Declan Berry: The Sayre quarterback is more of a running than passing threat but he could look to go after Muncy with his arm. Wyalusing had some success there last week, so look for Sayre to probe passing opportunities early.
Outlook: What Muncy coaches especially liked last Thursday was how intense and focused the players came out. At times a year ago, the Indians sometimes were sluggish in games they were favored. They are trying to reverse that this season and if the Indians again come out strong, look for them to have another fun bus ride home.
