SCRANTON -- Penn College men’s soccer battled Marywood to a 1-1 tie in their season opener, Tuesday evening at Pacers Turf Field. The Wildcats withstood seven Marywood attacking actions from 76:13 to 84:14 in the second half without conceding, keeping the score at 1-1. The Wildcats and Pacers both begin the season with 0-0-1 records.
Penn College struck first, just 2:02 into the match when Will Watson scored off Diego Diaz’s assist for a 1-0 lead. Diaz forced a save less than a minute later, and Justin Crismale made two saves as Marywood pressed for an equalizer. Marywood tied it in the 38th minute, and the contest went to halftime level at 1-1.
Penn College kept Marywood off the board in the second half, with Crismale making four saves as the home team generated pressure after the 61st minute and later hit the left post. The Wildcats also created chances of their own, including shots by Warrick Beachy and Justin Boring and two corner kicks in the final three minutes. PCT closed with late shots from Robert Antonini and Logan Berfield before the final whistle ended the match tied 1-1.
Watson scored the Wildcats’ goal with his lone shot on frame. Diaz recorded an assist and added a shot on goal. Crismale made six saves over 90 minutes in goal, including four in the second half. Boring led PCT with two shots, both on goal.
Dawson Meckes scored the game-tying goal on his lone shot and finished with two points. Owen Clearwaters led Marywood with five shots, including three on goal. Kelton Ostrander recorded four saves in goal.
The Wildcats host DeSales University on Friday.
