South Williamsport turned homecoming night into a complete team celebration on Friday, controlling the line of scrimmage, producing touchdowns with several different runners and shutting out Canton, 56-0, at Rodney K. Morgans Stadium.
The Mounties scored 21 points in the first quarter, built a 35-0 halftime lead and never allowed Canton to gain momentum. South Williamsport finished with 319 total yards, including 279 on the ground, while holding the Warriors to 86 total yards and only 10 rushing yards.
South Williamsport coach Chris Eiswerth said the performance followed two close losses and a difficult stretch filled with injuries. He credited his players for responding during the week and being ready when their roles increased.
"The guys kind of pulled together and just put a great week together," Eiswerth said. "Some guys filled in, some guys got healthy, played a little bit, and good things happened."
The Mounties set the tone immediately. Garrett Lorson scored on a 9-yard run, Eli White followed with a 6-yard touchdown and Colton Paulhamus added a 5-yard scoring run. Kaiden Paulhamus converted all three extra points for a 21-0 advantage after one quarter. White scored again from 2 yards out in the second quarter. Later in the quarter, Colton Paulhamus intercepted a Canton pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown, stretching the margin to 35-0 by halftime.
White led the rushing attack with 90 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Taylor Naugle added 71 yards and two scores on five attempts, while Cade Lusk ran 10 times for 71 yards and a touchdown. Colton Paulhamus contributed 35 yards and a rushing score in addition to his defensive touchdown. Lorson, normally a running back and linebacker, stepped in at quarterback and completed 4 of 9 passes for 40 yards.
He also scored the game's first touchdown. Eiswerth said Lorson was pressed into quarterback duty the previous week with limited preparation, then used a full week of practice to become a dual-threat option.
"We thought if we could get him a week under our belt, get him working and put a nice package together for him and the guys, they really came out and did a great job," Eiswerth said.
South Williamsport continued to pull away in the third quarter. Naugle scored on a 4-yard run and Lusk added an 8-yard touchdown. Naugle closed the scoring with a 35-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Kaiden Paulhamus finished a perfect 8 for 8 on extra points. Eiswerth praised Naugle as a hardworking, multi-sport athlete who has shown a habit of breaking long runs late in games.
The coach also valued the chance to rest players after a physical three-week stretch and give younger Mounties meaningful time under the lights.
"It's always fun when you can do that under the lights on a homecoming night," Eiswerth said. "It's very gratifying to come out at homecoming and put a game like this together."
The Mounties recorded 21 first downs and converted 4 of 7 third downs. Their defense limited Canton to three third-down conversions in 13 attempts and intercepted two passes. Iziah Touchet recorded one interception, while Colton Paulhamus returned the other for a score.
Canton coach Tyler Sechrist said South Williamsport's strength and preparation created problems from the start. The Warriors did produce eight first downs and 76 passing yards, but their running game was held to 10 yards on 24 attempts.
"They're a physical team. They spend a lot of time in the offseason lifting weights," Sechrist said. "We were just physically outmatched today, and mentally I don't think we came in prepared to start the game off the way we showed it."
Owen Moore completed 6 of 12 passes for 43 yards, and Brooks Wesneski completed 2 of 13 for 33 yards. Monte Whitehead led Canton's receivers with four catches for 41 yards. Bailey Gardner was the Warriors' leading rusher with 29 yards on 11 carries. Although Canton could not reach the end zone, Sechrist found one encouraging sign in a cleaner performance after recent games were hurt by mistakes. He said the Warriors benefited from several South Williamsport penalties and did a better job avoiding damaging flags of their own.
"The last few weeks, even though we won, we had a lot of penalties and a lot of mistakes," Sechrist said. "I think we were a little cleaner that way today."
South Williamsport was penalized eight times for 105 yards, but its rushing depth, defense and special teams kept the outcome firmly in control. Canton was flagged four times for 30 yards and did not commit a fumble.
