Sayre at Canton
Canton (3-2) is playing its fifth home game in six weeks and trying to stay ahead of Sayre in the District 4 Class A standings. The Warriors are fifth and Sayre (2-3) sixth in the seven-team field with all seven eligible for districts. Canton already has exceeded last year's win total and rallied from deficits to defeat Cowanesque Valley and Wellsboro.
Canton's defense is second among area teams in yards allowed (148.6) and has allowed just 15 points in three victories. The Warriors did not allow a point after the first quarter in a 14-6 win against Wellsboro as it produced five sacks. Bailey Gardner and Marcus Solomon both are among area leaders with four sacks.
Quarterback Owen Moore is having a strong sophomore season and is fifth in passing yards. He threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns in last year's 21-14 win at Sayre. Monte Whitehead had 99 yards and two touchdowns in that game and sparked the comeback against CV with an 80-yard touchdown. Rylan Wesneski caught seven passes for 121 yards against Wellsboro.
Sayre has heated up, winning its last two games after going winless a year ago. Quarterback Declan Berry has thrown four touchdowns in those games and workhorse running back Hudson Malanoski has gone over 100 yards each time. He ran for 101 yards in last year's Canton game. Wide receiver Brayden Vorhis had a big game in last week's 41-12 win at Wyalusing, catching five passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.
Cowanesque Valley at Towanda
Cowanesque Valley has won two straight games, outscoring those opponents, 81-7. The defense allowed just 53 yards in last week's 52-7 win at North Penn-Mansfield as Dave Hess returned an interception for touchdown and Trenton Schaar, Justin Schaar and Stevie Olson combined for four sacks. Justin Schaar and Olson each have six tackles for loss and Trenton Schaar three sacks.
Hess is the first CV player in the 2000s to top 4,000 career total yards and has gone over 2,000 rushing and 1,000 yards the past four seasons. He is the area's leading rusher through five games and has added three sacks. Gavin Churchill threw for 118 yards and two touchdowns last week, finding Cam Stahli and Logan Huntington for scores. Stahli averages 22.3 yards per catch and has two interceptions. Colton Fegley ran for 105 yards and a touchdown against North Penn-Mansfield, while kicker Mason Wonderlich drilled an area-high 41-yard field goal and went 7 for 7 on extra points.
Towanda (2-3) has lost three straight games but has the potential to go on a run during the season's second half. Senior Jazick Brown is having a sensational season, leading the team in rushing and receiving despite missing a game. Brown has totaled 688 yards and Gage Evans has been the thunder to his lightning, both going over 90 yards eight nights ago against Athens and both averaging more than nine yards per carry.
Seven players have produced sacks and Kolton McPeak returned a blocked punt for a touchdown against North Penn-Mansfield. Gabe Wolf intercepted two passes in the season opener at Sayre.
Bucktail at Coudersport
Bucktail (0-4) continues hanging tough in its games and is giving opponents a tough time with its offense. That continued last week at Smethport as sophomore Corbin Pentz threw for 164 yards and three touchdowns. Teagan Stone caught two of those scores and Aidan Ditty went 55 yards with another.
Stone is closing in on 50 career catches halfway through his junior season despite missing the second half of his freshman year with an injury. Pentz, Stephen Heiser and Patrick Tarantella all have over 100 yards thus far and Levi Stevenson had a 100-yard game a year ago as a freshman. Seven different receivers caught passes last week and Angelo Tarantella caught a 25-yard scoring strike the previous week.
Bucktail will be playing Coudersport in consecutive games with the Falcons coming to Bucktail in two weeks following Bucktail's off week. The Falcons (1-4) have lost three straight since defeating Cameron County, 20-6. They swept two games from the Bucks a year ago. Running back Christian Driskell sparks the offense, running for 338 yards and two touchdowns.
Central Mountain
at Shikellamy
What has been a demanding schedule shows no let up tonight as Central Mountain faces the surging Braves who are coming off big wins against Williamsport and Jersey Shore. The Wildcats are trying to break out offensively after being shutout the past two weeks.
Linebacker Kole Corman is having another super season, leading the area in tackles for a second straight year and averaging 15 per game. He is both the program's all-time and single-season tackle record holder. Jacob Rembold averages eight tackles per game and returned an interception for a score at Warrior Run. Cade Watkins has sacks in two of the last three games and Gavin Heverly and Alex Johnson have both ripped off some long punt and kick returns with Johnson taking one for a touchdown at Warrior Run.
Shikellamy (4-1) has rallied for wins three times this season after trailing either late in the third quarter or fourth quarter. It mounted a last-minute drive at Williamsport and scored the final 30 points in last week's 56-27 victory against Jersey Shore. The Braves intercepted four passes in that game and Maddox Hoover and Xavier Baker-Allen sealed victory with fourth quarter pick sixes.
Thomas Pollock has become one of the most prolific wide receivers in District 4 history and has eclipsed both 200 career catches and 3,000 yards. He was virtually unstoppable against Jersey Shore, catching 12 passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 42 yards on two carries. Sophomore quarterback Bob Felmy is having a big season starting for the first time and threw for 291 yards and five touchdowns last week.
Northwest at Milton
Despite losing three straight games, Milton (1-4) has a shot at taking the fourth spot in the District 4 Class AAAA playoffs if it heats up during the second half. The Black Panther defense has been strong for the most part, but self-inflicted mistakes frequently have put it in tough positions.
Schuyler Humphrey and Brady O'Rourke both are making runs at 100-tackle seasons and Jackson Wertz is second among area players with 13 tackles for loss. Those three and Michael Runkle all average more than seven tackles per game and all have multiple tackles for loss.
Milton has produced shutouts in all four of its wins the last two seasons, allowing just 27 yards in a 35-0 Week 2 win at Hughesville in which it collected six sacks. Quarterback Kamryn Wilson threw four touchdowns that game, three to Ja'Cori Brown and another to Jhemzuel Feliciano. Both have more than 10 catches, 100 yards and mutliple touchdowns. Wilson moved to receiver last week at Montoursville and Paxton Humphrey threw for 126 yards.
Northwest (4-1) won its first four games but missed opportunities in the first half against Hughesville a week ago before losing, 21-0. The Spartans scored 21 straight second-half points after Northwest outgained it during the first half. The Rangers, however, already have doubled last year's win total and are third in the District 4 Class A standings.
Loegan Diltz is one of four Northwest rushers who has more than 200 yards this season, leading the team with 368 and five touchdowns. Three of Ben Bonham's four catches have gone for touchdowns and Cole Cavuto has thrown for six scores.
Troy at N.P.-Mansfield
North Penn-Mansfield (0-5) could be the district's youngest teams and has its hands full tonight against the three-time defending NTL-I champions. North Penn-Mansfield has improved offensively the last few weeks and sophomore quarterback Peyton Greene had a big game at Northwest, totaling 316 yards and four touchdowns. He also has thrown for scores in three straight games.
Conner Lewis, Colton Pellett and Keaton Manikowski caught touchdowns at Northwest and Pellett hauled in a 35-yarder a week ago against Cowanesque Valley. Bentley Chilson returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown at Towanda and Jeremiah Lawrence ran for 71 yards and a score against Sayre. Bohdi Nickerson averages a team-high 11 tackles per game and freshman Bridger Lehman 8.5
Troy (4-1) appears well on its way to a fourth consecutive league title, topping second-place Athens in Week 3. The 2024 Class AA state champions have won four straight games since a season-opening loss against Montoursville and the starters have allowed just two touchdowns the past two contests.
Troy is showing some explosiveness through the air with Spencer Martin throwing for 241 yards and three touchdowns in last week's win at Wellsboro. Trey Teribury is having a big season and caught six passes for 185 yards and a touchdown. It was the second time in four games he eclipsed 100 yards.
Wellsboro at Athens
A week after playing NTL-I leading Troy, Wellsboro (1-4) heads to second-place Athens. The Hornets are playing a team with a winning record for a fourth straight game and trying to snap a three-game losing streak.
Quarterback Derrick Blasz has played well in place of injured starter Griffin Morral. He threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns in his first start a week ago. Grady Morral and Colton Hauser each caught those scores and Reed Richardson ran for 81 yards on nine carries. Christian Main picked off a pass and Max Mascho added a sack.
Wellsboro gave Athens one of its best league games a year ago, leading by seven late in the third quarter before losing, 35-22. Griffin Morral threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns in that contest.
Athens has won three straight games since losing to Troy, the only team which has beaten in during the regular season the past two years. Quarterback Connor Davidson is one of District 4's most explosive athletes, producing 1,305 yards and 19 touchdowns. He is tied for second in touchdown passes (13) and among the district's top 10 rushers with 540 yards. He also has a district-high five interceptions and returned a punt for a touchdown against Wyalusing.
Kade Rowe had a big game in last week's win against Towanda, catching nine passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Gage Marmor is another big-play threat and had three catches for 74 yards with a score.
