Beating Berwick has Williamsport remaining No. 1 in power rankings
Trending
1. Williamsport (6-2): Tevin Williams went over 4,000 career yards last Friday at Berwick. The junior quarterback has accumulated 4,172 yards and two touchdowns in his first 29 high school games. Williams also has topped 2,000 passing yards and 1,400 rushing yards.
2. Montgomery (7-1): Senior running back Trace Furman missed his freshman season injured, but surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards a week ago. Furman and fellow running backs Josh Knoebel and Lincoln Miller all have more than 1,000 career yards as well.
3. South Williamsport (6-2): South is allowing the fewest points by an area team during the 2000s, although that number is unfinished. The previous best were Jersey Shore allowing 7.0 points per game in 2014 and Montgomery 7.4 last year. Those teams went a combined 21-3.
4. Montoursville (5-3): Brayden Burkett is having a super defensive season, but he also has been a consistent offensive playmaker the past three seasons. The junior reached 50 career catches a week ago and leads the team in receptions this year.
5. Lewisburg (4-4): It's pretty amazing what quarterback Xavier Carter has done since returning from injury in Week 5. He's had an impressive just in those four games, throwing for 964 yards and 17 touchdowns. Carter also has now gone over 1,000 yards in consecutive years.
6. Jersey Shore (4-4): If one wants to understand how good Jersey Shore has been over the last decade, this marks the first time since 2018 that it has not been ranked among the area's top five teams. It's not like the Bulldogs are having a bad year either; they've just run into some excellent teams and have hit some adversity, but they remain dangerous come playoff time.
7. Muncy (5-3): Nate Rogers joined the career 80-catch club last week. The senior has caught 80 passes for 1,351 yards and 13 touchdowns. Those are strong numbers for a player who missed most of his sophomore season with an injury and who was part of a powerful running offense those first two years.
8. Loyalsock (4-4): Ethan Boyer has become a nice special teams weapon. Boyer drilled his first career field goal last week and is third among area kickers with 32 points. He has missed just three kicks this season.
9. Hughesville (3-5): There was so much excitement which transpired during last week's Warrior Run game but Alphonzo Smith made a hidden, yet huge play to open the second half. Also playing a stellar defensive game, Smith returned the second-half kickoff 38 yards to Warrior Run's 37-yard line, setting up a touchdown and putting the comeback wheels in motion.
10. Warrior Run (3-5): How tough is Denyn Beachel? Despite suffering a torn ACL five weeks ago, Beachel returned to the field last Friday at Hughesville. And not only did Beachel play, but he played great. The senior leader produced nine tackles, forced a fumble and added a tackle for loss.
11. Milton (3-5): Junior linebacker Schuyler Humphrey already has surpassed his tackle total from last season when he burst onto the scene with 87. Humphrey is 11 from reaching 100 tackles this year and is averaging 11.1 per game.
12 Canton (4-4): Sophomore quarterback Owen Moore went over both 2,000 career passing yards and 1,000 this season last Friday against Athens. Not too shabby for a player who did not become Canton's full-starter starter until the second half of his freshman year.
13. Wellsboro (3-5): From Weeks 7-10 the past two seasons--yes, I know this year is still going on--Wellsboro is 5-1. The Hornets also have won five straight games during those intervals as well.
14. Cowanesque Valley (2-6): CV received a big lift a week ago as senior linebacker Kegan Lane made his season debut. The 2025 Sun-Gazette first teamer made a team-high seven tackles and, despite missing six games, needs just two tonight to reach 300 career stops.
15. Bucktail (1-5): What an impressive turnaround Bucktail made last week while earning its first win. Two weeks after Coudersport thumped them, 41-14, the Bucks came back and dominated the game over the final 3 ½ quarters. The defense allowed just one score during that time and Bucktail ran at will, highlighting its progress this season.
16. Central Mountain (0-8): Central Mountain played its best defensive game last week, allowing just 234 yards against a team which was averaging more than 330 going into the contest.
17. North Penn-Mansfield (0-8): North Penn-Mansfield opened a four-game stretch against the NTL-I champions and face the NTL-II champions tonight. In between, it faced Athens and Muncy. Combined, those four teams are 26-6. Talk about a road for a young team.
