Local roundup: Muncy beats rival Montgomery 2-1 in girls soccer

A goal by Kiki Woodward in the 77th minute gave Muncy an exciting 2-1 win over rival Muncy in Mid-Penn action in girls soccer, 2-1. Ava Eyer scored right before halftime off an assist by Eva Nagel before Montgomery eventually tied it in the 62nd minute on a penalty kick by Aubrey Staggert.

Woodward’s go-ahead goal was assisted by Amelia Beckman.

Hughesville suffered a shutout loss at home to Crestwood, 3-0. All three of the Comets’ goals came in the second half as Leah Brady scored twice and Sarah Kondraski added a goal. Kalia Hack had 16 saves for the Spartans as Crestwood out-shot Hughesville, 21-10.

Maeve Ficks and Makayla Wolfe both found the back of the net to lift Milton to a 2-1 road win over Mifflinburg. Kyleigh Ficks had an assist. The Black Panthers were out-shot, 12-9.

Loyalsock came up just shy in a road game against Line Mountain, suffering a 2-1 loss to the Eagles. Jenna Foulds and Reagan Boyer both scored in the first half for a 2-0 lead. Loyalsock kept battling and in the second half, the Lancers broke through as Olivia Alberts scored on a Molly Boyer assist. Ava Deknecht had six saves in goal to keep Loyalsock in the game.

• Muncy and South Williamsport battled to a 1-1 draw in boys soccer action. Kyran Lisembee scored off a Tony Stroble assist in the 60th minute for a 1-0 Muncy lead. The Mounties kept pressing, however, and put in an equalizer in the 79th minute by Carson Harris. South held a 13-11 advantage in shots on goal.

Dylan Hensler scored off a Ezra Paulhamus assist, but it wasn’t enough to spark a rally as Jersey Shore suffered a 2-1 loss against Lourdes. Josh Miller and Leo Losiewicz both scored within a 10-minute span for Lourdes for a 2-0 lead before Hensler’s goal came in the 26th minute. Jersey Shore held a 16-13 edge in shots on goal as Aiden Lape had 11 saves for the Bulldogs.

Montoursville twice overcame a deficit to force a 2-2 tie at Millville. CJ Lucas scored off an assist by Hunter Mumbauer to tie the game in the 59th minute. After Millville went ahead in the 72nd minute on a goal by Grayson Betz and an assist by Zeki Boyunegmez, Montoursville kept pressing. The Warriors scored in the 76th minute when Riccardo Montini Bellosio fed a pass to CJ Lucas as Lucas buried it.

Montoursville held a 15-10 edge in shots on goal.

• Montgomery battled tough and beat Selinsgrove in girls tennis, 3-2. At No. 3 singles, Avenlyn Moore of Montgomery won a three-set contest over Anna Young, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Montgomery’s Emily Miller lost at No. 2 singles to Madison Maneval in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Benton recorded six goals in the second half to beat Hughesville, 9-0. Carter Smith had two saves as Benton was effective finding the back of the net.

• Area schools competed at the NEPA Invitational in boys and girls cross country. on the boys side, Hughesville senior Wyatt Laubacher had an outstanding race, running a 16:13.90 to win the event by 25 seconds over Towanda’s Emmett Klees, who took second. Midd-West’s Grant Boop was third in 16:37.20, Mount Carmel’s Ebin Hine took fourth in 16:44.40 and Sullivan County’s Calen Sweigart was fifth in 16:50.00 with a personal-best time.

Lewisburg’s Tyler Confer, a freshman, ran a personal-best time of 17:01.40 to take eighth. Jersey Shore’s Samuel Davis, a senior, had a personal-best time of 17:09.20 to take home an 11th-place finish. Hughesville sophomore Everett Shaner finished 13th in 17:14.40.

Canton’s Manuel Halbfoerster was 17th in 17:17.10 and Sullivan County’s Carter Blasi, a junior, rounded out the area runners to finish in the top 20 as he ran 17:19.30 to take 19th.

On the girls side, Hughesville sophomore Emelia Wolfe ran a 19:24.60 to take second place, trailing only Towanda sophomore Maris Cobb’s 18:43.80. Sullivan County junior Paige Jordan had a personal-best time of 20:23.70 to take sixth.

Lewisburg sophomore Ella Beal ran a 20:25.10 to take eighth and teammate Kaelyn Bozella, sophomore, took 11th in 20:43.90.

Hughesville junior Evey Meckbach took 15th with a time of 21:00.20 and Lewisburg’s Loghan Klinger, a junior, ran a time of 21:13.50 to take 20th.

• Williamsport lost to Chambersburg on the road in four sets, 3-1 (25-16, 26-24, 20-25, 25-21). Jenna Schmidt led Williamsport with 16 points, Mollie Roan had 13, Peyton Dincher had 11 and Pippy Kieser, KAdence Smith and Geiani Whaley all recorded 10.

Kieser had a team-high 12 kills and Ava Fischer recorded eight. Peyton Dincher had 10 assists and Libby Radspinner had nine and Kieser had a team-high 16 assists with Roan. Ellie Kinley had 11 digs, Radspinner had eight, Kadence Smith had seven and Fisher and Dincher both recorded five.

Williamsport hosts Montoursville in a battle of talented teams on Monday at the Magic Dome for Williamsport’s pink out game.

• Junior Riley Hackett pocketed a pair of goals to lead the Lycoming College field hockey team, which fell, 4-3, to Drew University. Lycoming (3-6, 0-2) had the upper hand in shots, 20-11, but Drew (5-5, 2-0) scored three tallies in the fourth quarter.

After a scoreless first period, Drew was awarded a penalty stroke midway through the second period, but Lycoming junior keeper Hillary Clark kicked it away to keep the contest scoreless.

Two minutes later, senior Ava Daly took away an errant pass and fired a shot that was saved by the Drew keeper, but deflected right to junior Riley Hackett, who slapped in the first goal of the game to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead at halftime.

• The Bucknell women's soccer team earned its fourth shutout in its last five games, but the Bison could not get any of their 20 shot attempts to go at the other end and finished in a scoreless draw with Loyola at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.

Sarah McFarland made four saves en route to her sixth shutout of the season. The Bison defensive unit has solidified in the last month. Since conceding three first-half goals at Towson on Sept. 6, Bucknell has given up only one goal in its last five contests, and that was on a penalty kick. The 90-minute clean sheet against Loyola extended Bucknell's streak to 497:25 - more than eight hours of game action - without giving up a goal in the run of play.

Penn College shutout Wilson, 4-0, in a United East Conference women’s soccer game on senior day. The Wildcats finished with 35 shots, including 18 on goal, and held the Phoenix without a shot.

Prior to kickoff, eight Penn College Wildcats were honored for their contributions to the program. Erin Galanaugh, Sierra Klinger, Mia Clark, Alli Lynn, Makayla Bucks, Rylee Oliphant, Holy Herbert and Ginny Yost made up the Wildcats’ senior class.

The Wildcats turned a first half of sustained pressure into two late goals, with Camryn Lobb scoring from Lily Persing’s assist at 39:46 and Megan Kurian added another goal at 40:53 to take a 2-0 lead at the break.

Mansfield traveled to Millersville and took a 5-0 loss to the PSAC rival Marauders. Daphney Frank got her first start in goal for the Mounties (1-10-0 | 0-9-0 PSAC), collecting four saves in the first half. Angel Gulé collected four saves of her own in the second half.

Mansfield got four shots off in the game coming off the feet of Aaliyah Stocks, Teagan Herbers, Hannah Winchester, and Mikayla Britz.

Bryn Constanzer scored the game-tying goal in the 82nd minute as the Lock Haven women's soccer team battled Seton Hill to a 2-2 draw at Hubert Jack Stadium as part of homecoming weekend.

With the result, the Bald Eagles moved to 6-4-2 overall and 5-3-2 in PSAC West action, while Seton Hill moved to 4-4-3 overall and 4-2-3 in conference play. After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, all four goals came in an action-packed second half.

Seton Hill opened the scoring in the 49th minute, but Lock Haven answered just over six minutes later.

• Sophomore Leandro Cruz scored the first goal and assisted on the other two as the Lycoming College men’s soccer team earned their first victory in Landmark Conference play, defeating Drew University, 3-0.

Lycoming (5-5, 1-1) pulled in front in the 42nd minute when Cruz scored off an assist from first year George Preston to put Lycoming in front 1-0 at halftime.

Lycoming added to the lead in the second 45 minutes as sophomore Matthew Sweeney scored off Cruz’s feed in the 68th minute and freshman Connor Hussman put the final touches on the afternoon with an 82nd minute score, with Cruz again assisting.

Penn College defeated Lancaster Bible, 2-0, in a United East Conference men’s soccer game on senior day. The Wildcats scored once in each half and recorded the shutout behind five saves. Penn College honored Jimmy Friedman, Hunter Gabloff, Logan Pietrzak and Owen Sheils as the four-man senior class was highlighted prior to kickoff.

Robert Antonini put Penn College in front in the first half, scoring from Diego Diaz’s assist at 33:09 for a 1-0 lead. Earlier, the Wildcats built pressure with shots from Andrew Mathes and Diaz and three corner kicks before the goal, then added another corner and a blocked Miller Kahmar shot in the first 45 minutes. Justin Crismale made two saves, and the Wildcats went into halftime ahead 1-0.

Mathes extended the lead to 2-0 when he scored at 56:24 in the second half. Penn College kept creating chances afterward, including Logan Pietrzak’s shot on goal and two Diaz corner kicks during a 64th- to 67th-minute stretch. Crismale made three saves in the half as the Wildcats closed out the 2-0 win.

Lock Haven controlled much of the second half and held a 14-8 advantage in shots, but the Bald Eagles secured a scoreless draw with Shippensburg. With the result, Lock Haven moved to 2-3-6 overall play, while Shippensburg moved to 2-4-4 overall.

After Shippensburg held a 6-4 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes, the Bald Eagles turned up the pressure after halftime and outshot the Raiders 10-2 in the second half. Lock Haven finished the match with a 14-8 advantage in total shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

Patricio Zapata struck the left post in the 50th minute, and moments later Noah Brady and Billy Lawrence put shots on target that were turned away by Shippensburg goalkeeper.

• Junior Keegan Gill and sophomore Mason Morrow, a Montoursville graduate, earned wins for the Lycoming College men’s tennis team, which fell, 5-2, in a Landmark Conference match at Drew. Lycoming wraps up the fall portion of their schedule at 1-6 and 0-3 in the Landmark, while Drew moves to 1-1 and 1-0 in Landmark play.

In No. 4 singles, Gill earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory, while Morrow picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win in No. 5 singles. It was the second consecutive win for each player. In No. 3 singles, freshman Teli Bobotas, a Montoursville graduate, fell 7-6 (7), 2-6, 10-8 in a superset tiebreaker.

Susquehanna University earned the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. Griffin Yereance and Max Persing defeated Valentino Barillaro and C. Ambromovage 6-1 at No. 3, and Owen Miller and Daniel Murphy clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Joshua Myers and Eli Greeley at No. 1. Penn College answered at No. 2, where Matt Williams and Avery Hawk defeated Dante Neely and Owen Trump 6-2.

• The Lycoming College women’s tennis team played their final conference match of the fall, falling 7-0, at Drew University. Lycoming falls to 4-4 and 0-3 in the Landmark, while Drew moves to 2-1 and 1-0 in Landmark play.

Junior Sadie Stahl, a South Williamsport graduate, earned a first set victory in No. 1 singles. The Warriors will wrap up their fall slate with a non-conference match at Alfred University on Wednesday. The match will begin at 4 p.m. in Alfred, N.Y.

Penn College fell to Susquehanna, 6-1, at the Central PA Tennis Center. The Wildcats opened doubles with Leah Vest and Kiera Wene defeating Alexa Wanamaker and Mackenzie Romig 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Susquehanna answered at No. 3, where Elizabeth Vitale and Rowan Butters defeated Arista Fine and Callistra Mahoney 6-4, then clinched the doubles point at No. 2 as Katherine Yoder and Abigail Freeman edged Faith Murray and Alex McDougal 7-5.

• Penn College faced two tough opponents, falling in a United East Conference match to Gallaudet 3-0 (20-25, 14-25, 20-25) and a non-conference contest against Lebanon Valley 3-0 (21-25, 14-25, 8-25).

Against Gallaudet, the Wildcats’ biggest response in the first set came after an 11-5 deficit, as Lilly Stockum had three kills and a service ace, and Peyton Maass added two kills during a push that got PCT within 14-13. Gallaudet kept the Wildcats from pulling even and closed the set 25-20. In the second set, Janae Carden’s kill pulled PCT into a 10-10 tie, but Gallaudet followed with nine straight points to build a 19-10 lead.

Against Lebanon Valley, the Wildcats’ main push in the first set came after Lebanon Valley went ahead 18-13, as kills by Sara Seyfert and Kendall Shade helped Penn College get back within 20-18. Earlier, Lilly Stockum served consecutive aces during a 4-0 response that pulled the Wildcats even at 4-4 after the visitors’ opening surge. Lebanon Valley finished off the set 25-21. Penn College could not recover from Lebanon Valley’s 5-0 start in the second set, and Lebanon Valley went on to take the set 25-14.

• The Lycoming College men’s golf team finished first in a tri-match with Wilkes University and Misericordia University at the par-72, 6,477-yard Huntsville Golf Course. The Warriors posted a 321 (33 over) in stroke play. Sophomore Tre Lesperance led the field with a 74 (2 over), and sophomore Hill Meserve placed second with a 76 (4 over).

Lesperance led the field with three birdies and Meserve posted an eagle on the first hole, a par-5, 482-yarder.
