Mifflinburg PPG--34.1, PPA--14.2; YPG--376.1, YPA--374.2
Mifflinburg notes: The defending District 4 Class AAA champions took a big graduation hit, but continue rolling, entering tonight's game riding a six-game winning streak. Mifflinburg (7-2) highlighted that streak with a 21-7 win against Montoursville last week in a rematch of last year's district final. That win virtually ensured Mifflinburg of no worse than the No. 3 seed in next week's 3A quarterfinals. A win tonight would likely help Mifflinburg vault No. 2 Athens as well. The offense has been explosive but the defense equally as stingy the last few weeks. Mifflinburg has allowed just seven points in those games and held Montoursville scoreless until the fourth quarter. Landon Moser, Seth Hartman and Isaiah Kurtz all have 10 or more tackles for loss and Kurtz and Moser have produced defensive touchdowns. Moser also has gone over 1,000 rushing yards and topped 90 yards in six consecutive games. Sophomore quarterback Brennen Snyder has excelled in his first year starting, showcasing his mobility with two long touchdown runs against Montoursville. The 1,000-yard passer also has thrown touchdowns in seven of nine games.
Mifflinburg player to watch--Jackson Marr: The senior receiver has added another weapon to the offense after missing six games with an injury. In two games since his return, Marr has caught eight passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. He has caught at least three passes in all three starts this year.
Lewisburg PPG--31.2, PPA--30.1; YPG--342, YPA--222.8
Lewisburg notes: Lewisburg (5-4) has been one of the area's most improved teams these last five weeks, winning four times and its only loss being a four-point thriller against undefeated Bloomsburg. That surge has Lewisburg controlling its own destiny as far as hosting a Class AAA quarterfinal next week. If Lewisburg wins tonight it secures the No. 4 seed and a home contest against Montoursville. If Mifflinburg wins and Montoursville defeats Loyalsock, Lewisburg would head to Montoursville. Either way, it has been a nice turnaround season for the Green Dragons who have made a three-win improvement. Quarterback Xavier Carter has been at the heart of this five-game surge with the offense erupting since he returned from a three-game injury absence in Week 5. Since then, Carter has thrown 22 of his district-high 23 touchdowns while going over 1,000 yards for a second straight year. Jaylen Walker and Drake Osunde both have topped 700 receiving yards and Walker is the program's all-time leader in catches, yards and touchdowns. Osunde is making opponents pay for double teaming Walker and caught five passes for 111 yards and three touchdowns in last week's 35-14 win at Milton. Lewisburg also is running the ball well and freshman Ethan Coleman gashed Milton for 111 yards on 24 carries, going over 100 yards for a second straight week and third time in five games.
Lewisburg player to watch--Jett Jameison: Jameison set up a last-second first-half touchdown with a critical eight-yard reception last week and has developed into one of the area's top punters. The junior is averaging 39.4 yards on 20 punts, placing eight inside the 20, and has a long of 70. Jameison also played well when Carter was sidelined, throwing for 266 yards and five touchdowns in a 38-17 win against Hughesville.
Outlook: This looks like it should be one of District 4's best games this weekend. Both are playing their best football at the right time and each looks dangerous come playoff time. Add in the rivalry factor and this is about as good as it gets.
