Mount Carmel beats Montoursville at Memorial Stadium 35-14

By From staff reports 2 min read

Montoursville and Mount Carmel exchanged touchdowns in the first quarter and went into the second tied up at 7-all, but from there, the Red Torandoes turned things on.

Mount Carmel scored 21 points in the second quarter to take a 21-point lead into the half and never let Montoursville threaten from there en route to a 35-14 win at Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

Cooper Karycki had a 72-yard touchdown run with 6:39 to play in the first quarter to put the Red Tornadoes up, 7-0, early. But Montoursville used its ensuing drive and scored when Elijah Eck threw a 13-yard strike to Brayden Burkett to tie it up.

In the second quarter, however, Mount Carmel scored three touchdowns in a roughly six-minute span to pull away.

Karycki had a seven-yard touchdown run with seven minutes until halftime. With 3:05 remaining, Aiden Brokenshire caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jaylen Delaney. And less than two minutes after that, it was Kenny Miller catching a 23-yard touchdown from Delaney to go score.

Mount Carmel gained more than 400 yards of total offense, majority of that on the ground. Montoursville wasn’t able to limit the Red Tornadoes' rushing attack as Mount Carmel carried it 62 times for 380 yards. Karycki had 20 carries for 161 yards and two touchdowns, Mikey Higgins carried it 14 times for 83 yards and a score, Delaney had 18 carries for 87 yards and Jason Klokis had 50 yards on nine carries.

In the third quarter, Mount Carmel went ahead 35-7 thanks to a Higgins two-yard run with 9:19 left. Montoursville would score its final touchdown when Eck threw a 43-yard strike to Bryson Fillman in the final minute of the third quarter. But the Warriors wouldn't be able to rally back against a talented Red Tornadoes squad.

Eck had success passing as he finished his night 12 for 23 for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Kaden Kleinman caught one for 14 yards, Fillman had tow receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown, Cole Snyder had five for 80 and Burkett caught four passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Delaney went 6 for 9 for Mount Carmel for just 27 passing yards, but did throw two touchdowns.

The loss drops Montoursville to 4-3 while Mount Carmel moved to 7-0. The Warriors have back-to-back road trips next by traveling to Central Mountain in Week 8 and Mifflinburg in Week 9 before returning to Memorial Stadium in Week 10 on Oct. 30 to host rival Loyalsock in the annual Battle for the Bridge Game.
