Warrior Run at Mifflinburg preview

By Chris Masse 3 min read

Warrior Run PPG--25.4, PPA--22.0; YPG--364.8, YPA--332.4

Warrior Run notes: Warrior Run (3-2) won its first three games and was ahead in the fourth before Denyn Beachel, the area's leading rusher at the time, tore his ACL and quarterback Logan Stevenson, second in passing yards, was potentially lost for the season at Bloomsburg. That on top of losing all-star two-way lineman Garrett Williams to an ACL tear in Week 2. The Defenders are moving on the fly right now, trying to plug the holes and moved the ball well at times a week ago against Lewisburg. Sophomore quarterback Jackson Bowers played well in his first significant varsity action, throwing for 156 yards. Bryson Weigel and Emiliano Torres both ran for touchdowns. Weigel and Liam Moore are both among the area's top 10 in receptions and receiving yards. Weigel has totaled 505 yards and three scores. Moore caught four passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns at Bloomsburg. Devante Mitchell caught four passes for 98 yards last week. Rutgers-bound lineman Jackson Albright has both 3 ½ sacks and 11 tackles for loss. Linebacker Chase Wirnsberger leads the team in tackles and Cayden and Carter Robinson have four tackles for loss. Warrior Run and Mifflinburg combined to go 20-5 last year, each winning 10 games.

Warrior Run player to watch--David Stiner: The versatile senior can play either at defensive end or linebacker and that flexibility is especially valuable now. Stiner has five tackles for loss and set the tone in a season-opening win at Muncy when he generated 1 ½ sacks. Stiner also has at least one tackle for loss in four of Warrior Run's five games.

Mifflinburg PPG--26.2, PPA--20.2; YPG--338.6, YPA--248.6

Mifflinburg notes: Mifflinburg (3-2) has won consecutive games, including a thriller a week ago against Loyalsock when it scored in the final two minutes and prevailed, 32-27. The Wildcats feature one of the district's most balanced offenses and running back Landon Moser has been a force the last two weeks, going for 373 yards and four touchdowns. He has career-highs in each game, rushing for 205 yards against Loyalsock. Quarterback Brennen Snyder has flourished in his first year starting, topping 100 yards and throwing at least one touchdown in all five games. Six receivers have caught touchdowns and Luke Brubaker hauled in four passes for 114 yards against Loyalsock. Cameron Schenck has caught touchdowns in three straight games. The defense allowed just 21 yards in a 36-0 win at Hughesville two weeks ago. Brubaker had three of the team's eight sacks that night.

Mifflinburg player to watch--Isaiah Kurtz: The junior linebacker was at the heart of the success in that Hughesville win and leads the team in tackles, averaging 7.8 per game. He also has seven tackles for loss, two sacks and returned an interception for a touchdown against Hughesville.

Outlook: Obviously, the injuries make it hard to get a read on where Warrior Run is at right now. The team has been pretty resourceful so far, but it will have to play a great game to have a chance tonight.
