Warriors look to snap losing skid today vs. Catholic

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Lycoming's Louie Shank (14) emerges for a pile with a recovered fumble by Montclair during a college football game at David Person Field in Williamsport on Saturday. Montclair won 30-28.

Defensively, Lycoming played outstanding last week against Rowan. But while the defense gave up just one touchdown and only nine points, the offense wasn't able to take advantage as the Warriors were shutout, 9-0, on the road.

The loss dropped the Warriors to 1-3 after Lycoming opened the year with a win. Lycoming heads into today's home matchup against Catholic looking to snap a three-game losing skid early in the season at David Person Field at Girardi Stadium.

Lycoming struggled all around last Saturday offensively against Rowan. Joe Lyons threw for just 66 yards on 6 of 17 passing and rushing-wise, Spencer Ferguson gained just 60 yards on the ground on 21 carries. As a team, Lycoming had just 118 yards of total offense in the loss.

Lyons will look to get out of the funk he was in last week and get back to playing as he knows how to. He has 602 passing yards in four games and has four touchdowns to five interceptions. The quarterback averages 150.5 yards per game in the air. Lycoming also will look to get the ground game established with Ferguson, who's taking over carries for an injured Terrance Oliver.

Oliver has a team-high 206 yards through three games but Ferguson has ran it for 176 yards this year and is averaging 3.7 per carry. The Warriors will hope to get more production out of him again this week.

Lycoming beat Catholic last year, 38-12, and have won three of the last four matchups with the lone loss coming in a close 14-12 game in 2024. Lycoming also beat Catholic in 2023 (28-25) and 1998 (49-14).

Catholic enters today's matchup still searching for its first win as the Cardinals are 0-4 following last week's 47-10 loss to No. 12 Salisbury on the road. Catholic has scored 20 or more points just once this year, coming in a narrow 38-35 loss at home to Carnegie Mellon in Week 2.

The Cardinals trailed by just 7 to ranked Salisbury after the first quarter, 14-7, but Catholic scored 26 over the next two quarters while holding the Cardinals to a field goal in that span to pull away.

The Cardinals weren't able to get a running game established in the loss, rushing for just 10 yards as a team on 28 carries. Brady McBride saw some success passing, however, going 17 for 25 for 105 yards, but he was sacked five times as Salisbury tried to disrupt his rhythm.

McBride has thrown for 809 yards this year with eight touchdowns to just three interceptions, averaging 202.3 per game in the air. Rushing-wise, the Cardinals have only run for 89 net yards this year while giving up 599.

Giving up that many rushing yards means Ferguson of Lycoming will look to have a big game and make plays to keep the chains moving.

Catholic is currently in a rough stretch of the season. The Lycoming game is sandwiched between two ranked opponents for the Cardinals: last week against No. 12 Salisbury and next week against No. 22 Susquehanna.
