Williamsport beats Montoursville at Magic Dome in girls volleyball 3-0

By GARRETT CARR 3 min read

Despite losing, Williamsport volleyball head coach Patti Jones thought that her team played some of its best volleyball of the season in a 3-1 loss on the road to Chambersburg on Saturday.

The Millionaires would pick up right where they left off in terms of quality of play, beating a talented Montoursville team, 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-21) at the Magic Dome on Monday.

"They're playing well. They played exceptionally well on Saturday against a really difficult team. We were seeking out teams that we could be challenged by, and we did a really good job on Saturday hanging with that team and playing hard. I think Saturday we played some of our best volleyball," Jones said. "Today, coming in without a practice, they started off strong, which has been a focus all year, making sure we can start off strong. They were hitting hard and working together, and it's just great to see them do that. We also have a lot of kids who are either playing sick or were out sick. Hopefully, we can just get healthy again here soon."

Williamsport can handle injuries and sickness better than most teams, as their depth up-and-down the roster is impressive. That showed in a big way on Monday.

"We've had people who are able to step in, whether they're just in to serve, they're in to hit, whatever it may be. Everybody else is gracious enough to let the person who has the hot hand go in there or take a back seat if they're not having their best day or if they're just not feeling well, which has been a thing. We just need to get healthy again," Jones said.

The Millionaires got off to a hot start in the first set, jumping out to a quick 9-1 lead on a block by E'gypt Ringkamp. An ace by Peyton Dincher made it 20-5, and Williamsport cruised home to a 25-9 set win.

It was more of the same early on in the second set, as Maisie Saunders' kill put Williamsport up 9-4. Montoursville stormed back, and and 8-3 run was capped off by a kill by Sophia Rosato to bring the score to 12-9. But Williamsport was able to win the big points late in the set, and a Pippy Kieser kill won the set, 25-21.

Montoursville got off to a good start in the third set, as Laney Yonkin's kill made it 6-3 Warriors early. And an ace by Rylee Reeder put the Warriors up 15-13 as they looked to steal a set. Williamsport came roaring back, though, and a crafty tip by Kieser put them up 23-21 as they won the set, 25-21.

Seeing some adversity in the third set was good for the Millionaires.

"Montoursville is a new program, and they're doing amazing. Hats off to coach (Ku'uipo) Tom and what he's doing with that program. Our girls know each other. They play club together, so it's kind of fun to go against each other, but to have a game where you have competition is great," Jones said. "That's what we're here for. Our girls can rise above mistakes and continue to work and move forward is great."
