MOUNT CARMEL– With Coal Bucket in its rear view mirror, Mount Carmel set out to improve on its passing game in Friday’s District Class AAA playoff game at the Silver Bowl against Wellsboro.

It took just three plays to achieve that.

Senior quarter Jaylen Delaney connected on a 59-yard strike down the middle to junior Aiden Brokenshire for the first score of the game on the opening drive as Mount Carmel routed Wellsboro 49-0 to improve to 11-0 on the season.

The Red Tornadoes will host Mifflinburg in next week’s playoff game in the Silver Bowl.

Delaney was 5 of 6 for 124 yards passing as he threw three touchdowns in the first half. He rushed for two touchdowns of 2 and 34 yards while gaining 49 yards on five carries. Brokenshore caught two passes for 90 yards.

“In some previous game we saw some opportunities where we could have taken advantage of (the passing game) a little bit, and we just wanted our guys to get a little bit more used to it and to build some confidence in it, and we achieved that objective tonight,” Mount Carmel coach John Darrah said.

The Red Tornadoes needed just eight plays to go up 21-0 after the first quarter. Those eight plays came in the first three drives of the game. Mount Carmel used 12 players carried the ball for 234 yards on the ground as they racked up 358 total yards on offense.

It is the eighth game of the season in which the Red Tornadoes (11-0) have scored 49 or more points.

The defense pitched their second shutout of the year, while intercepting three passes. It is the seventh game of the season in which the defense has held teams to 20 or fewer points. Mount Carmel led 21-0 after the first quarter and 49-0 at halftime.

“I think our passing game pairs well with our running game,” Brokenshire said. “We’re just taking it week-by-week, we’re going to continue to practice hard, and play hard.”
