Tioga County commissioners OK funding to finish Westan project
WELLSBORO — Tioga County commissioners on Tuesday approved a request from the Tioga County Development Corp. for $225,000 to pay for architectural and engineering fees and related administrative costs for the demolition of all but two of the existing buildings at the former Westan Tannery in Westfield.
The money will come out of natural gas impact fees funds, Commissioner Roger Bunn said.
“This will be used as part of a match for $1.5 million in Redevelopment Assistance Capital Grant Program funding for demolition of the site. Hopefully it will get them the entire match they need,” Bunn added.
Commissioner Mark Hamilton said it is “important for them to finish what has been ongoing for several years.”
“We have spent a lot of money getting an Act 2 clearance for that area, getting all the chemicals out of there so anyone can come in there and have assurances there are no environmental issues,” Hamilton said.
The buildings that remain “are a fire hazard and this project will complete that and demolish them with the exception of two smaller buildings they are trying to save,” he said. “TCDC needs this $225,000 to get them over the hump and get this project completed.”
