The organizers of the 9/11 Memorial Ride announced Friday morning on social media that the 2021 ride will happen.
The group’s Facebook post said both the state House and Senate have passed a bill exempting the ride from state Department of Transportation liability requirements. The requirements effectively blocked the 2020 ride from occurring. The social media post said Gov. Tom Wolf has indicated he will sign the legislation, which was sponsored by state Rep. Joe Hamm, R-Hepburn Township.
“Each year on the anniversary date, thousands of people from multiple states and Canada travel to my district to show their respects,” Hamm said. in remarks on the state House floor. “Thousands line the route waving the American flag.”
The first ride happened in the days following the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001. The enforcement of the liability requirements in 2020 was the first year since for the ride to be canceled.
“It is unnecessary. It is unfair,” Hamm said of the liability requirements.
“We cannot thank you enough for writing and calling your legislators on our behalf,” the organizers’ Facebook post told the event’s supporters.
