Remains of a badly-decomposed body -- believed to be that of a man missing for an undisclosed amount of time -- were found Thursday morning in a wooded area in the vicinity of Lycoming Creek Road and Hays Lane in Loyalsock Township, according to investigators.
Due to the body's decomposition, it may be several weeks before authorities will be able to positively identify the man, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, officials said. It was believed the state police found the remains -- about 250 yards east of Lycoming Creek Road -- after receiving a tip sometime around 9:20 a.m.
Jerold Ross, the county's chief deputy coroner, and another deputy coroner were called to the scene about 10 a.m. The remains were removed about 12:30 p.m. and taken to the Forensic Center at UPMC Williamsport.
Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. said the body will likely be transferred sometime next week to the Erie offices of Dr. Dennis Dirkmaat, a forensic anthropologist, who will assist officials in determining a positive identification of the man, who has likely been dead since the summer.
Investigators said they believe they know the victim's identity, but no further information will be released until Dirkmaat makes an official determination and completes his report.
