A 41-year-old single mother, Heather K. Cohick, who was shot to death in her apartment about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday worked in the health field, according to a neighbor.
Lycoming County Coroner Charles Kiessling released the woman’s identity early Thursday afternoon.
Cohick lived on the first floor of a five-unit apartment house at 884 W. Fourth St. , city police said.
Police were dispatched to the building to investigate “a report of loud popping noises followed by screaming,” according to a police department news release.
Cohick was pronounced dead at the scene of “apparently gunshot wounds,” the release said.
Cohick’s 2-year-son was in the apartment at the time, according to the neighbor.
“A child was in the apartment at the time, but was not harmed,” police Capt. Josh Bell said Thursday morning. He said the child was now in the care of the victim’s relatives.
“There is not a whole lot we can release this morning,” Bell said. “We’re following was leads we have.”
This was the third city homicide since late May. Malik Davis, 39, of Williamsport, was shot dead in a side yard at 718 Elmira St. on May 23. Ziar Young, 20, was shot to death in his apartment at Victoria Gardens, 653 Hepburn St., on Aug. 17. No arrest has been made in either case.
No arrest has been made either in the double shooting that sent two 15-year-old boys to the hospital with gunshot wounds in the 2100 block of Newberry Street on Aug. 21. Both teens have recovered, and investigators believe the shooting was gang-related.
