Within minutes after firing gunshots at a Pennsylvania College of Technology police officer on Vine Avenue about 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, the alleged gunman was taken into custody about a block away, Williamsport Police Chief Justin Snyder confirmed at the scene.
The officer was not injured, Snyder said.
Dozens of police officers rushed to the neighborhood to assist with the apprehension and the ongoing investigation.
Snyder would not comment on how many shots were fired. It was believed that the officer did not return fire.
Williamsport police were initially called to investigate a disturbance just west of 1020-1022 Vine Avenue.
Since the property borders Penn College, campus police responded as well.
“We were called here to investigate a disturbance,” reportedly involving a gun, Snyder said.
“A suspect believed to be part of an altercation was approached by a Penn College officer. That person produced a handgun and fired at the officer. He was not injured,” Snyder said.
“That person is in custody. There is no threat to the public right now,” he said.
At least a half a dozen shots were fired, some of them striking the back of the Village Apartments, a two-story Penn College dorm, other officers at the scene told the Sun-Gazette.
The gunman will face aggravated assault-related charges and will be arraigned later today.
