Horse perishes in Hepburn Township barn fire

A large barn loaded with bales of hay went up in flames early Monday morning on Rose Valley Road in Hepburn Township.
The fire at 1708 Rose Valley Road was reported by a passerby about 2:20 a.m.
Brent Michael, township assistant fire chief, said he could see the fire a quarter mile away. The building was engulfed in flames when volunteer firefighters reached the scene.
While two goats and a horse escaped the burning structure, another horse perished in the blaze, Michael said.

The identity of the property owner was not released. No one was home at the time.

Volunteer firefighters from 10 communities worked with Hepburn Township fire company in battling the blaze, which took about 90 minutes to bring under control.
There were no reports of injuries.
Tankers shuttled water from a pond about a half a mile north of the scene.
A township backhoe and other equipment were used to help break apart the multiple bales of burning hay. The building was a total loss.
Cpl. Nicholas Loffredo, a state police fire marshal, was at the scene Monday morning, trying to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
Firefighters were called back to the scene at 9:10 a.m. Monday morning for a rekindle.
