WILLIAMSPORT- Power was knocked for the entire UPMC medical facilty on Thursday evening.
Partial power was restored to the facility by a hospital generator at 8:45 p.m.
The power outage occurred about 7:20 p.m. when city firefighters were dispatched to investigate a report of smoke in the complex.
The plan was, if needed, to move the most critical patients at UPMC to other medical centers.
City fire officials said they found no fire and it was unknown what cause the power to go out.
Multiple ambulances have been sent to the hospital to transport patients,if needed, to other facilities.
All city firefighters, extra police officers, state troopers, all hospital employees were here to help with deploying the medical center’s disaster plan.
For some unknown reason the hospital’s generators did not turn on, leaving the entire facility literally in dark.
One city officer said it was eerie to come down High Street and see the entire complex in darkness.
At 8:45 p.m. the facility’s generators began working, restoring electrical service to some parts of the hospital.
A city fire offical confirmed there was no fire in the hospital, but there appeared to be “an electrical issue” in the hospital’s generator room located on the south side of the medical complex, one city fire officer confirmed.
At 10 p m. patients were safely being kept at UPMC except for two, one baby and one adult, who were flown to other medical centers, officials said.
