Williamsport woman charged with third-degree murder in baby’s death

A 21-year-old city woman was arrested on felony charges of murder of the third degree and endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly failing to get immediate medical care after she “delivered a 23-week gestation infant in her Fifth Avenue home” on Tuesday afternoon, city police said.
Chemari May Truax, of 411 Fifth Ave., was arraigned just before 5 p.m. Wednesday before District Judge Christian Frey and committed to the Lycoming County Prison on no bail.
The woman told investigators that she “had been feeling nauseated” so she went to her bathroom “and subsequently delivered the infant on the bathroom floor,” police said in a news release that was issued following the arraignment.
“Truax said the infant was breathing, but she did not believe the baby would survive. She did not seek or summon medical assistance” for the infant, the release said.
“Truax cut the baby’s umbilical cord, but did not clamp it. After approximately an hour of the infant continuing to breathe, Truax went to UPMC Williamsport,” police said.
Shortly after Truax and the baby arrived at the hospital, the infant went “into cardiac arrest. Twenty minutes of resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful, and the baby was pronounced dead at 4:23 p.m.,” police said.
Through their investigation, police learned that Truax traveled to a medical clinic in Harrisburg in November 2022 and underwent a procedure “to terminate the pregnancy,” but the procedure “was unsuccessful,” police said. Furthermore, investigators learned that Truax went to the Geisinger hospital at Pennsdale in mid-February after experiencing “abdominal pain,” police said.
“She was told that she was still pregnant, and while there, Truax tested positive for cocaine,” investigators added.
When Truax arrived at UPMC with the baby on Tuesday, she was asked if she had “been using cocaine” earlier this day, police said. Medical staff wanted to get a urine sample from her, but she refused, and she “immediately signed herself out against medical advice,” police added. Officers executed a search warrant at Truax’s home, where they “located the umbilical cord cut from the baby at the time of birth,” police said.
