Truck crash on Williamsport highway causes traffic jam, minor injuries

A truck driver suffered minor injuries Wednesday afternoon when his rig, loaded with paper, overturned where the Route 15 South spur merges with Route 220 north, west of the Maynard Street interchange, according to city police. The driver, whose identity was not available, climbed out of the wreckage on his own, police said. He was taken by ambulance to UPMC Williamsport, where he was treated for his injuries, police said. It appeared that the Maryland license plate on the trailer was expired, police said. The crash occurred about 1:45 p.m. City firefighters also responded to the accident. Southbound traffic on the spur as well as Route 220 North where it turns into I-180 was at at standstill for at least 40 minutes. While city police and the state Department of Transportation moved quickly to divert motorists away from the area, police officers eventually were able to slowly move drivers stuck in the backup by diverting them around the tractor-trailer via the southbound berm. Close to 3:30 p.m., a PennDOT official said "it's going to be a while" before the crash is cleaned up so motorists were advised to avoid the area
