City firefighters rushed to a first-floor apartment at the Victoria Gardens complex, 653 Hepburn St., when a kitchen fire erupted about 3:20 p.m. Thursday. A platoon chief said smoke was coming from the unit when firefighters arrived on the scene. The male occupant of the apartment, whose identity was not released, was not injured, the chief said. It took firefighters about 10 minutes to put out the fire, which remains under investigation. Because electricity and gas to the building has been shut off, all tenants had to find other housing, which the local chapter of the American Red Cross was providing. While most tenants should be back in their apartments by Monday, the man whose apartment was damaged by the fire will likely be displaced for an extended period of time, officials said.
