A motorcyclist was killed in a violent collision involving his motorcycle and a pickup truck at the West Fourth Street entrance to Route 15 South, just west of Bowman Field, about 6:10 p.m. Monday, city police confirmed.
When police, paramedics and city firefighters were dispatched to the scene, they were told that there was a victim in the road in cardiac arrest. The victim, whose age and identity were not available, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
The eastbound lane of West Fourth Street was littered with debris from the crash. The truck was facing west with the motorcycle on its side, right next to the rear passenger side of the truck, which was dented. It was unknown if the truck driver suffered any injuries.
Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. and his chief deputy both responded to the crash.
The operator of the pickup truck was heading westbound on Fourth Street and was turning left onto the entrance ramp to Route 15 South when it and the cyclist, who was heading east, collided, police said.
Kiessling said the cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was killed instantly by the impact.
Police immediately closed Fourth Street from Arch Street to Bowman Field. The West Fourth Street off-ramp of Route 15 also was closed. Traffic was expected to be detoured around the area for an extended period of time. It was reported that police may call for a state police accident reconstructionist to assist with the investigation.
The fatal crash occurred just 10 minutes after three vehicles collided at Little League Boulevard and Pine Street in the city. One of the drivers was pinned briefly in his vehicle. City firemen used an extrication tool to remove the driver's door in order to free him. The man was taken by ambulance to UPMC Williamsport. No one else was injured, police said.
