Lycoming County inmate faces new set of charges

Already incarcerated on four felony warrants, Shakur Smith-El has now been charged with yet another felony for attempting to flee from city police on July 17 when he jumped from the roof of a house on Cherry Street, according to court records filed at the office of District Judge Aaron Biichle. On that afternoon, an officer, well aware the 25-year-old fugitive was wanted on several bench warrants, spotted him entering a house in the 1200 block of Cherry Street. The officer soon saw Emith-El on the roof of the home and ordered him to come down at once, police said.
Smith-El, of 1536 Louisa St. went to the other end of the roof, jumped to the ground and took off running, police said, adding that he ran through several yards and about three blocks before he was apprehended at the rear of 427 Hawthorne Ave. He allegedly damaged a fence during the pursuit. After being treated at UPMC Williamsport for a hand injury, Smith-El was automatically placed in the Lycoming County Prison on the bench warrants and then subsequently jailed in lieu of $500,000 on three felony counts of fleeing and one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance filed by police departments here, Lancaster County or Dauphin County.
He was recently arraigned before Biichle on another count of flight to avoid apprehension, evading arrest and criminal mischief, all from running from police last month. Smith-El waived his preliminary hearing on these city police charges last week and remains locked up in lieu of an additional $75,000 bail.
