Rushing to 932 Race St. Williamsport, early Monday morning to a house fire with a report of someone trapped inside, two city firemen, assigned to Engine 14-1, could hear a woman screaming for help as they neared the scene.

When they arrived, they saw the woman “hanging” from a second-story window as smoke was pouring from the same window, according to Platoon Chief Greg Delany.

The two firemen grabbed a ladder from their truck, leaned it up against the house and safely brought the woman down to the ground, Delany said.

The woman’s identity has not yet been released. She called 9-1-1 herself to report the fire about 3:30 a.m. She was the only one home at the time. It was unknown how many lived in the house or if she lived alone.

Once he was on the scene, Delany ordered a second alarm after seeing flames coming from a kitchen vent at the back of the house.

The rescued woman was put on a stretcher, loaded into an ambulance and taken to UPMC Williamsport, where she was being treated for smoke inhalation.

City firefighters also rescued the woman’s cat.

In addition to 10 off-duty city firefighters, volunteers from Old Lycoming Township, South Williamsport, Loyalsock Township and Montoursville responded on the second alarm, Delany said.

One city firefighter suffered a minor hand injury in fighting the fire, which was declared under control just after 4 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This was the third house fire in the city in as many days.

A vacant rental property on Lyon Place in the city’s East End sustained extensive damage in a blaze early Saturday morning, and five people were displaced late Saturday afternoon following a kitchen fire at 634 Sixth Avenue.
