Sun-Gazette Week 7 power rankings

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent After a win against Williamsport last week, Jersey Shore is 5-1 and No. 1 in the Sun-Gazette power rankings entering Week 7.

1. Jersey Shore (5-1): The 2016 Williamsport Class 6A district champion featuring six all-staters is the only area team in the 2000s which is averaging more yards through six games than Jersey Shore which is at 486.8. Of course, that number will be severely tested tonight against Hollidaysburg.

2. Montoursville (5-1): This is a team with big goals this year, so it probably matters little to it, but a victory against Central Mountain would ensure Montoursville its first winning season since 2021.

3. Warrior Run (5-1): Speaking of streaks, Warrior Run is a victory from securing consecutive winning seasons for just the second time this century. The Defenders produced three straight winning seasons from 2004-2006, going 21-11 and twice reaching the postseason.

4. Montgomery (5-1): Is there an echo in here? Montgomery also can achieve the same feat Warrior Run is seeking with one more win. The Red Raiders would seal two straight winning seasons themselves for a second time in the 2000s and for the first time since 2000 and 2001.

5. Loyalsock (4-2): Let’s keep this train moving. Loyalsock is two victories from achieving a 13th straight winning campaign. The Lancers also are tied with South Williamsport for the area’s longest ongoing district playoff streak with both at 13 seasons.

6. Williamsport (4-2): Talk about a Murderer’s Row kind of stretch for Williamsport. Starting last Friday Jersey Shore, the team’s Week 6-9 opponents are a combined 23-1 entering tonight. Add in Week 10 opponent Wilkes-Barre and the Millionaires second-half opponents are 27-3.

7. Muncy (4-2): Muncy had some chances it would like back against Montgomery last week. The way things look at this point, they will get another chance, too, with Montgomery and Muncy likely meeting in the District 4 Class A semifinals.

8. South Williamsport (3-3): A two-week offensive eruption has moved the Mounties from ninth among 17 area teams to second in yards per game. Gaining 942 yards in two games can do that for a team. And who would have guessed that six games into the season a South quarterback would be tied for second among area players in touchdown passes?

9. Wellsboro (3-3): Not saying it would have stunned Athens last week, but the Hornets were up 14-7 late in the third quarter when they intercepted a pass. Film shows the quarterback legally was hit as the threw the ball, not late, but roughing the passer was called. Athens went onto score on that possession, as well and seized the momentum. Make the right call and who knows what happens?

10. Lewisburg (1-5): I know it’s no consolation to it but I cannot imagine there’s a better 1-5 team in the state than Lewisburg. I said a similar thing about Mifflinburg last year when it was 1-5 and lost a series of close games. Like that Mifflinburg squad, this Lewisburg one is loaded with talented underclassmen, so, despite the record, things are looking up.

11. North Penn-Mansfield (4-2): Despite its struggles the last two weeks, North Penn-Mansfield controls its playoff destiny. The Panthers are sixth in the District 4 Class AA standings and the top eight teams reach the postseason.

12. Milton (1-5): I missed this one last week but Milton quarterback Monty Fisher went over 3,000 career total yards in a Week 5 game at Danville. Fisher has topped 1,000 rushing and receiving yards and now is adding passing yards since becoming the team’s starting quarterback in Week 3.

13. Hughesville (2-4): Going on the road tonight might be a preferred Hughesville option. The Spartans are 2-0 on the road and 0-4 at home. They also have allowed just seven points in those road games with the defense surrendering none of them.

14. Cowanesque Valley (2-4): CV and CMVT has been an under the radar exciting series. The last three games have been decided by 21 points and the victorious squad overcoming second half deficits each time.

15. Canton (1-5): Injuries have taken a severe toll, but a lot of young players who many not have had much varsity time this season now are starting and/or contributing. It’s rough going through it now, but the situation could pay big dividends the next few years.

16. Central Mountain (0-6): The Wildcats are the only team which has held Shikellamy scoreless for a half. Not even Jersey Shore and Shamokin could do so.

17. Bucktail (1-5): Teagan Stone did a bit of everything at Otto-Eldred last week. He carried the ball 13 times for 97 yards, caught two passes and threw four more.

Starting at $2.99/week.
