Trapped by smoke and fire on the second floor of his South Williamsport home on East Seventh Avenue on Tuesday morning, a man climbed out a window and onto his porch, where he was rescued by Williamsport firefighters, according to Platoon Chief Mark Killian.

The resident, whose name was not released, climbed off the roof using a ladder provided by firefighters, Killian said.

“We had smoke coming from the second floor on all sides of the home,” he said in describing conditions firefighters faced when they arrived at 307 E. Seventh Ave. about 7:10 a.m.

While en route, firefighters were told by a dispatcher that there was a person trapped on a roof.

All other occupants who had been in the home, which dates back to the mid-1800s, made it it out on their own, Killian said.

The fire was in a second-floor bathroom, but there was extensive smoke and heat damage throughout the property as well as water damage on the first floor, displacing a family of four, who were being assisted by the local chapter of the American Red Cross, he said.

The fire itself was contained to the bathroom, and extinguished in a matter of minutes, Killian said.

City fire officials are leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.

Assisting city firefighters at the scene were resources from fire companies in DuBoistown, Loyalsock Township and Jersey Shore.
