Jersey Shore parents charged after two-week old infant suffers multiple fractures

JERSEY SHORE –

During his first two weeks of his life, an infant born on March 7, suffered at least a half a dozen fractures, according to Lycoming Regional police.

On Tuesday morning, police arrested the baby’s father, Brett Aaron Dailey, 21, and Dailey’s 19-year-old girlfriend and the child’s mother, Pebbles Lee Byers, charging them both with allegedly inflicting the injuries.

“I may have been a little too rough when changing the child,” Dailey admitted to investigators in an interview.

He and Byers were taken into custody at their home at 513 S. Broad St. The two each face one felony count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Detective Justin Segura, the lead investigator in the case, said the parents brought their son to Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital on March 20, telling “medical staff that the child’s arm was not moving and that there were white bumps under his tongue,” it was stated in an affidavit.

The medical staff took X-rays which revealed “the child suffered multiple fractures to his arms and legs,” it was stated in the court document. The baby also had a tissue tear on his tongue as well as bruises on his face, Segura said.

The infant was transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville for more extensive care, and law enforcement were notified, the detective said. Medical staff determined that the baby’s injuries were “consistent with child abuse,” it was stated in the affidavit.

Also, upon further examination of the newborn, doctors discovered two additional fractures, bringing the total number of fractures to seven, Segura said.

Dailey and Byers told police that the baby had “been in their care the entire (two weeks of his life), and they were the ones who had been changing the child and bathing him,” Segura said.

The child is recovering from his injuries and remains in protective care, the detective said, adding that the parents have been permitted supervised visits with their son.

Following their arraignment before District Judge Denise Dieter, Dailey and Byers were both jailed in the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail each.

Starting at $2.99/week.
