Frightened child jumps from moving car on 180 on-ramp in Williamsport as couple argues

By Philip Holmes 1 min read

On Sept. 5, motorist Maurice Jules Thomas was driving so recklessly as he and his wife argued in the car that one of two juveniles riding in the vehicle jumped out as the vehicle was slowing down on the Maynard Street on-ramp to Interstate 180 West, Williamsport police alleged. Before entering the ramp, the 37-year-old Thomas ran through red lights and cut off vehicles, nearly causing accidents, police were told. As Thomas was about to get on the interstate, his wife "pressed the electric park button that slowed the vehicle down," it was stated in an affidavit. After the one frightened child jumped out, Thomas stopped the car, which allowed his wife and the other child to safely get out, police said, adding that Thomas then drove off, abandoning the others, the court document stated. Thomas, of 321 Locust St., was arraigned early Saturday morning before District Judge Kirsten Gardner on three counts each of felony endangering the welfare of a child, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and one count of reckless driving. He was committed to the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
