Doretha Bennett, 72, of 1300 W. Fourth St., Williamsport, has been charged with theft and tampering with evidence after she allegedly stole $100 from a customer at the Laundromat, 1200 Vine Ave, on June 9, according to city police. The victim had placed the cash on a table while attending to one of the machines in the business, police said, adding when she returned to the table, the money was gone. Surveillance video caught Bennett allegedly taking the money, police said. She was soon taken into custody nearby. At police headquarters, she was given several opportunities to return the money, but she refused, police said. An estimated $87 was recovered after the money was located in her underwear during a strip search, police said. She recently waived her preliminary hearing before Frey and was released on $5,000 bail.
