Trees, a new council member on city’s agenda

Residents living along West Fourth Street in Newberry who had trees removed due to reconstruction of the street are planning to attend City Council tonight.

The Newberry Community Partnership will present its concerns, according to Council President Randall J. Allison.

The state Department of Transportation crews had to remove many of the trees in order to put in the new street and utilities, according to Allison.

It caused an uproar and some of these individuals approached council’s public works and Adam Winder, public works general manager, to see if the city could assist in replanting the trees once the construction of West Fourth Street, from Route 15 to the entrance of Williamsport Area High School, is completed.

The council also is expected to welcome a new member to fill a vacancy. The member will either be James Gardner, 22, or former Councilwoman Gerry Fausnaught. The position is for five months — the remainder of the year.

The vacancy was left by the resignation of Jonathan Williamson who took a job offer in Houston, Texas.

Starting at $2.99/week.
