No injuries in school bus crash that downed powerlines near Montgomery

No injuries were reported Monday in this school bus accident on Brouse Road near Montgomery. PROVIDED

MONTGOMERY — There were no reported injuries but Brouse Road in Clinton Township was shut down when it appeared that a school bus, with 26 students aboard, struck a utility pole, knocking down the pole as well as energized wires about 3:10 p.m Monday, according to reports from firefighters at the scene.

“We need PPL here now (to cut power to the lines) so we can get these children safely off the bus,” a fire officer at the crash site told a dispatcher.

One of the powerlines landed on the bus, which became energized, fire officials said. The crash occurred near Route 405.

PPL was able to de-energize the powerlines by shutting down a major grid, firemen said.

Officials were able to communicate with the bus driver via a cellphone during the ordeal.

Township Fire Chief Todd Winder commended the driver and the students on the bus for remaining calm during the entire incident.

Township firefighters and state police responded to the accident.

Just before 4 p.m., a fire officer reported that the down power line(s) had been de-energized and that all children on the bus were safely removed and placed on a second bus.

Other utility company wires were pulled down in the accident.

Starting at $2.99/week.
