Dushore martial artist named Grand Master

Master Clair Black, of Dushore, has been named Grand Master of Goshin Jutsu Karate (USA), an honor bestowed on March 16, 2026, recognizing decades of dedication to martial arts instruction and leadership.

According to a news release, Black is only the third individual to hold the title of Grand Master in the more than 65-year history of Goshin Jutsu Karate. The distinction was previously held by Jerry Durant, the system’s founder, and most recently by Joe Brague, who served as Grand Master until his passing in October 2025.

Black and his wife, Karen, operate a martial arts and self-defense school in Dushore, where they have trained students for many years. Their work has helped sustain and grow Goshin Jutsu Karate in Northeastern Pennsylvania and beyond.

Black, the news release said, also trained extensively in Erie, alongside Brague under the direct instruction of Jerry Durant.

“Black’s martial arts journey began in 1975 while he was attending Williamsport Area Community College (WACC) and searching for a new interest,” the news release said. “What started as a college pursuit soon became a lifelong calling. Just four years later, in 1979, he opened his first martial arts school, marking the beginning of a career that has spanned nearly five decades.”

A longtime student of both Durant and Brague, Black achieved a historic milestone in 2006 when he became Grand Master Brague’s first 9th Dan promotion, reflecting his technical mastery and deep commitment to the art.

With his appointment as Grand Master, Black assumes responsibility for preserving the traditions, teachings and future direction of Goshin Jutsu Karate in the United States, the news release said.
