Musician and teacher Amy Peck takes the Boom City stage
For Amy Peck, growing up with music was just the norm. Getting her start with singing in churches, Peck took piano and violin lessons throughout her childhood and was involved in anything she could — acting troupes, orchestra, vocal ensembles and school musicals to name a few. Every Sunday throughout her high school and college career, Peck sang at a different church. But it was one experience that made Peck know music was going to be part of her life for a very long time.
“What really kick started my career was when I was 14, I went on a six-week East Coast singing and dancing tour with a group called, ‘The Young Continentals.’ When I came back, music was my life,” she said. “I then recorded my first CD and continued my studies in performing any chance I could. I had some great teachers, too many to name, who helped me grow in passion and knowledge of music.”
Peck went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Eastern University and also studied at many other institutes and workshops.
“I’ve always loved learning about the voice and the muscles and better techniques on how to use the voice properly,” she said.
Peck said although she went to school for opera music, she has always been fascinated with the idea of crossover singing, where musicians of classical style will perform pop, rock or other genres.
” … being able to sing any style convincingly by changing the color and the tone of your voice, but doing it in a healthy way. I went to school for opera, but not because I loved opera, but because I wanted to learn proper technique and I wanted to learn everything I could,” she said.
Peck now teaches students the things she’s learned in college, with vocal, instruments and acting classes, bestowing her persistence and hard work on them.
“I talk a lot about committing to what you’re doing with my students,” she said. “To get into character and just do your best, but put aside your nerves, put aside everything and just commit and focus on what you’re doing. Just go for it. Also, it’s OK to make a mistake.”
For her performance at Boom City Brewing Company, 317 Pine St., 9 p.m. Saturday, Peck said she will be playing a mix of oldies, country and pop music, displaying her own musical preferences.
“I play keys and sing at these gigs, and sometimes have a drummer with me. It’s a blast.”
Peck said she very much enjoys country music, citing Miranda Lambert as one of her favorite musicians. She also said Kristen Chenowith is a big inspiration to her as well.
“I used to go to her concerts and just study her performance, her vocal technique and her stage presence. She sings all different styles of music, which I love,” she said.
