“Based on the Gospel of Matthew, ‘Godspell’ tells its story through parables, games and song, using humor, joy and heartfelt storytelling to explore timeless lessons of compassion and connection,” the press release said. “Featuring an eclectic score that blends pop, folk, and vaudeville influences, the show has remained a favorite for more than five decades.”
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the show’s original Broadway run, making this production especially meaningful. First developed as an experimental theater piece performed by a small group of young artists, “Godspell” grew from a grassroots project into a groundbreaking Broadway musical, all while holding tight to its core message of shared humanity.
“At a time when our world feels increasingly divided, ‘Godspell’ reminds us of the importance of common humanity,” said Seth Sponhouse, executive artistic director of the Community Theatre League. “This show is rooted in the idea that community is built through listening, empathy, and shared experience. Those themes feel more urgent now than they have in recent memory.”
The CTL production is brought to life by a vibrant ensemble of familiar CTL performers whose varied experiences and voices come together in service of the story. Together, the cast embodies the collaborative spirit and sense of shared humanity at the core of “Godspell.”
“At its heart, ‘Godspell’ is about building community through shared humanity,” Sponhouse added. “This cast comes together not because of what makes them different, but because of what connects them, and that connection is what audiences will feel.”
The cast of “Godspell” includes Dakkota Deem (Jesus), Seth Confer (John Baptist/Judas), Nicole Shoop (Nicole), Penny Samar (Penny), Maddie Bell (Maddie), Tyler Marvin (Tyler), Theodore Lentz (Theodore), Hannah McBride (Hannah), Kim Fulmer (Kim) and Tim Hippensteel (Tim).
