Route 220 re-opened several hours after early-morning crash
GLEN MAWR – Route 220 from Beaver Lake Road to Route 42 in Muncy Valley was closed for much of Wednesday after a northbound tanker truck went off the road and plowed into a utility pole and then became entangled in down power lines, about two miles north of here, according to Picture Rocks Fire Chief Al Little.
Following the 5 a.m. crash, the driver, who suffered minor injuries, was trapped in his cab for at least 90 minutes because firefighters could not reach him due to live wires on top of his overturned rig, which was loaded with powdered cement, Little said. The tanker truck remained intact.
Although they could not reach him, firefighters were able to get close enough to the driver that they could talk to him while they waited for PPL to arrive, Little said.
Once PPL crews responded and shut down the power grid to the down lines, firefighters were able to free the driver from the wreckage using extrication tools. The driver, whose identity was not available, was treated at the scene by emergency personnel, Little said.
It took several hours for the crashed rig to be removed and for crews to make necessary repairs to the power lines. The state Department of Transportation opened one lane of traffic about 2 p.m. and re-opened both lanes two hours later.
Little said black ice likely contributed to the crash. “The road was very slippery,” he said. State police are leading the investigation
