Cogan Station motorist charged with hit-run

After striking two parked cars in the 600 block of Market Street while driving his girlfriend’s 2010 Subaru Outback about 4:20 p.m. on Aug. 26, Robert Jay Jeirles headed north at a high rate of speed, “leaving a large cloud of smoke in the air due to the rubber from the damaged tire” on his vehicle, city police alleged in an affidavit. Jeirles, 49, whose driver’s license was suspended due to DUI offense, got as far as Bloomingrove Road, where witnesses saw him “seated in the driver’s seat, ‘staring out through the windshield,'” police were told. He abandoned the vehicle, which police said “smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage,” the court document stated. The girlfriend stated that Jeirles, who is on state parole, took her car to get to a doctor’s appointment and “then went out drinking,” the affidavit stated. After the crash, the girlfriend tracked him down at a liquor store, police said. Jeirles, of 1521 Pleasant Hill Road, Cogan Station, has been charged with accidents involving damage to unattended vehicles (hit-run) and four summary offenses. He has waived his preliminary hearing and is free on $5,000 bail.

Starting at $2.99/week.
