State police charge Williamsport man with hit-run after he allegedly damaged awning over a Puff Express drive-thru

Motorist Christian Lovecchio, 54, of 261 Cliffside Drive, has been charged with accidents involving damage to attended vehicle or property (hit-run), a misdemeanor, after he allegedly fled the scene of an accident in the 1300 block of Washington Boulevard in Loyalsock Township about 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 12, according to state police. While driving a U-Haul box-truck style van, Lovecchio struck the awning above the drive-thru window at Puff Express at 1349 Washington Blvd., police said. The driver backed up, parked and approached the window of the drive-thru to pay for cigarettes, police said.

Lovecchio, who acknowledged the accident, paid for the cigarettes and was told to wait so that the manager could talk to him, police said. However, he told the clerk he “really had to go and he fled the scene,” police alleged in the court document. Puff Express then contacted the local U-Haul office and asked an employee if any of their vehicles had been returned showing any evidence of being involved in an accident.

Lovecchio returned the van to U-Haul after the office received the call from Puff, police said. Upon bringing back the van, Lovecchio was asked by a U-Haul employee “if it was in any accidents or otherwise damaged,” the affidavit stated. According to the employee, Lovecchio “did not declare the crash until after he was asked directly about it,” police were told. Lovecchio was charged for the damage to the truck and paid the amount, police said. Lovecchio has been sent a summons to appear before a district judge.
