Muncy area home sustains extensive fire damage; family’s two dogs perished

MUNCY — A family of three was left homeless and both their dogs perished in a blaze Saturday night that extensively damaged their two-story house in a remote area of Muncy Creek Township on Waymol Lane, according to Muncy Area Deputy Fire Chief Logan Laidecker.

The couple and their daughter were not home at the time, but they called 911 when they were alerted on their cellphones by a security camera that there was a fire in the house, Laidecker said.

When volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene about 8:20 p.m., the home was engulfed in flames, Laidecker said, adding he was told that firefighters could see the flames as far away as Pennsdale. To reach the property, firefighters had to stretch 1,500 feet of hose up a very long, steep driveway, he said. It was all an exterior attack for the first 30 minutes until crews established an adequate water supply by setting up portaponds, a portable collapsible tank filled with water that is off-loaded from tankers, Laidecker explained. Numerous tankers were used to shuttle water to the scene from a nearby pond. Waymol Lane is a small dead-end road just west of Muncy Exchange and Glade Run roads, about two miles southeast of here.

It took about 90 minutes to bring the blaze under control, he said. Firefighters remained on the scene dousing hotspots until after 1 a.m. Sunday. There were no reports of injuries.

Besides Muncy Area, volunteer firefighters from Hughesville, Picture Rocks, Montoursville, Clinton Township, Washington Township, Lairdsville, Pennsdale and Warrior Run Area were among the companies dispatched to the scene.

The displaced family, whose name was not released, has fire insurance and was staying with relatives, Laidecker said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation by the state police fire marshal’s office.
