Police pursuit of stolen car ends in city crash

PHIL HOLMES/Sun-Gazette All five occupants in this stolen car took off running early Sunday morning after crashing into a double home on Washington Boulevard in the city. Those involved remained at large, state police said.

The driver of a stolen Hyundai Elantra and four passengers, all believed to be males, bailed out of the vehicle early Sunday morning when it crashed into a city home while being pursued by state troopers, a state police patrol supervisor said at the scene.

All five took off running and their whereabouts remained unknown, the supervisor, Sgt. Adam Kirk, said.

The pursuit began in the area of East Third Street and Westminster Drive in Loyalsock Township about 4:30 a.m. when two troopers in a cruiser attempted to stop the Elantra because of a broken taillight, Kirk said. The car had not yet been reported stolen, he added.

The driver continued west on Third Street and into the city on Washington Boulevard, ignoring the troopers, who had activated their cruiser’s emergency lights and siren, Kirk said.

As the driver of the Elantra was attempting to turn north on Grove Street, he lost control of the car which plowed into the southeast corner of 733-735 Washington Blvd., jolting awake Joseph Figured and members of his family.

The impact shook the house a bit and “ripped the gas meters right off the home. They were found jammed underneath the front driver’s side the car,” said Figured, who has owned the duplex for several years. The 733 side was vacant, he said.

Upon notifying the car’s owner of the crash, the owner realized it had been stolen from downtown Williamsport, Kirk said.

A forklift was brought to the scene to lift and secure the damaged portion of the building while a tow truck operator pulled the car out and away from underneath the home. Several large cinder blocks were then used to shore up the property, making it safe for Figured and his family to stay in the house.
