Cellphone’s crash-notification system helps responders locate accident victim

An elderly woman’s cellphone may have very well saved her life on Sunday afternoon when her car skidded off ice-covered Sulphur Springs Road in Armstrong Township and went down a 600-foot embankment, according to South Williamsport fire officials. The car caught fire, but the driver was able to get out of the vehicle on her own without getting burned.

The crash-detection system on her cellphone automatically alerted 911 to the accident about 3 p.m., and dispatchers at the county’s Department of Public Safety were able to pinpoint the exact location of the incident, according to borough Fire Chief Jeff Trammell.

Besides the icy-road conditions being extremely hazardous, it was very foggy at the time, and firefighters at first were not able to see the crash, he said. Once the fire was spotted, emergency responders immediately went to the driver’s aid. She was put in a Stokes basket that was loaded into an all-terrain vehicle that managed to reach the crash site directly via an access road. She was then put in an ambulance on Sulphur Springs Road and taken to UPMC Williamsport to get further medical treatment.

Firefighters from the borough, the city, DuBoistown, Nisbet and Washington Township responded to the call. The road was closed from South Williamsport to Elimsport until the state Department of Transportation was able to treat the slippery conditions.
