Driver’s speed primary factor in Route 44 fatal crash

When Lucas Smithgall lost control of his BMC coupe and crashed into an oncoming pickup truck Thursday night on Route 44 in Nippenose Township, the 19-year-old was traveling at about 90 mph, according to Lycoming Regional police.

Smithgall, of Pearson Road in Limestone Township, was killed instantly in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy coroner following the 6 p.m. collision, investigators said. The speed limit on that portion of the two-lane state road is 55 p.m., police said.

Traveling south on Route 44, Smithgall failed to negotiate a curve in the road before plowing into a northbound pickup truck driven by 86-year-old Charles Cowher. Riding with Cowher was his wife, Amy, 85, and their son, Randy Cowher, all of the 3100 block of Rauchtown Road in Clinton County’s Crawford Township, police said.

All three were taken to UPMC Williamsport for a variety of injuries.

Efforts to get any information on their medical conditions have been unsuccessful.

In a news release, police said this tragic crash “underscores the critical importance of safe and responsible driving by obeying posted speed limits and adjusting one’s speed appropriately for road and weather conditions.”

Police also urge motorists “to reduce one speed on curves and unfamiliar roads. Avoid aggressive and risky-driving behaviors, and be sure to stay alert, giving yourself adequate time and distance to react.”
