Smoke forces evacuation of wing at assisted-living facility

HUGHESVILLE – Residents in the B Wing at the Wolf Run Village Senior Living Community on Route 220 were forced to evacuate their rooms for about 40 minutes about 12:10 a.m. Tuesday when black smoke began coming out of a heating unit in one of the rooms, according to borough Fire Chief Dan Dorman.

No one was injured, and all the residents in the wing were safely moved to a large room away from the smoke, Dorman said.

The smoke tripped the facility’s fire alarm system, alerting the alarm company, which in turn notified the county’s 911 Center.

The staff did “a great job” in moving the residents to a safe area, Dorman said.

The smoking heating unit “turned itself off,” he said. All the smoke dissipated on its own, he added.

There was no damage from this incident, but the heating unit will likely have to be replaced, Dorman said.

All residents were allowed back in their rooms except for the one where the heating unit malfunctioned, Dorman said, adding that the resident was using a spare room until heat can be restored to that one unit.

Besides Hughesville, volunteer firefighters from Picture Rocks, Pennsale, Muncy Area and Montgomery responded on the call.

Starting at $2.99/week.
