Homeless woman lands in jail after allegedly stealing money from Jersey Shore woman

Heather Nicol Ellis, who is homeless, has been jailed on felony and misdemeanor charges after stealing a large sum of money from another woman who had allowed her to spend the night at her home on South Main Street in Jersey Shore, Lycoming Regional police allege in an affidavit.

Officers were dispatched to the victim’s residence on Jan. 14 after she arrived home from work to find the 56-year-old Ellis on the front porch opening up mail that had been delivered to the home, police said.

Ellis is alleged to have removed several thousands of dollars from the house, police said, adding that the money was found in a bag Ellis had put in her purse.

She opened numerous pieces of mail that were not addressed to her, police alleged. Ellis was taken into custody and arraigned before District Judge Kirsten Gardner on felony charges of theft and receiving stolen property as well as one misdemeanor count of theft of mail.

She recently was held for court on all three offenses and remains jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Starting at $2.99/week.
