Virginia woman arrested for allegedly deceiving local bank

Whitney Elizabeth Childs, 31, of Staunton, Virginia, has been locked up on charges of allegedly defrauding the South Williamsport branch office of the Journey Bank in October, borough police alleged.

Through mobile deposit, Child opened a new account by depositing a fake $1,466 check at a Bloomsburg area Journey Bank branch office on Oct. 22 it was stated in a borough police document. Soon after the fake check was deposited, Childs, on the same day, withdrew $1,800 from the account at the South Williamsport bank branch office, police said, adding that there actually were no funds in the account at all.

In an interview with investigators, Childs admitted that the only reason she opened an account at the bank was so that she could deposit the fake check and get cash from the bank, police said. She is alleged to have tried to deposit a second such check, but the bank rejected it, it was stated in a court document.

Recently arraigned before District Judge Gary Whiteman on misdemeanor charges of theft by deception, receiving stolen property and bad checks, Childs remains jailed in the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Starting at $2.99/week.
